I've been a little AWOL because, frankly, it's the worst-case scenario: The transmission on the car, she is finished. So now I have to have the car towed back to the Land of Oak, wherein I will decide if I want to pour roughly 3 months' income into the car I already have or take the money and buy someone else's old clunker

Damn, overnighter, the transmission? You're right, that is worst case scenario. How old is your car and how many miles do you have on it? Is it worth saving? But then again, is it worth taking a chance on another car?
