So I came across this when looking up the phrase 'lucked out' on Urban Dictionary. (FYI, it has the opposite meaning here than it does in the US.)

That's hysterical - though I for one do that but not for street cred. Who wants to mention a tiny county in VA that no one has heard of when you live 1.5 miles from a major metropolitan area that people across the globe know and loathe?

Oh it's all right for when travelling or living abroad, for sure... I must say though, I don't understand why saying 'I live *near* DC' isn't used more when the other person speaks English.

PS. Brits may have heard of Washington DC in a news sense but, I swear, half of them confuse it with Washington state in a geographical sense. So I'm fucked anyway. ;)

Heh, that's one of my entries on the trash list: DC Trash - People that say they live in DC when they really live in VA or Silver Spring. Similar to Jersey Trash which are people that say they live in NY but really live in the landfill across the river.
