A mad chase through the Ovon, just for the sheer hell of it. Partly inspired, sez Twin, by Techno's sketch of (her) in spiky-monstery form. Not to mention (she)'s been quite enjoying the role of guard dog ever since the rumours of the Neke's return began circulating.

I was thinking of posting this but you beat me to it. Mmm, that was insane. I don't know where some of that came from, though I did, as I said, think of the Befuddle Hall sequence. (That's from Feb. 23, 1908. Sorry about the mediocre scan; this is from a massive tome of the entire strip, so heavy that it was easier to put the scanner atop the page!) McCay's dream logic and fanatical precision are probably an interesting inspiration for the Mess as a whole.

I'm glad you shouted defiance at the Neke; I was thinking that'd be a good climax to the scene once I had the idea to jump out a window and go for a majestiic sideways view!

Woof! n.n

Oh, it was a great tension reliever for Amanita! Poor shiny's been all wound up since the vines got out of hand the other day... Might have to post that log as well.

I started out picturing this as a crazy semi-CG chase scene from a fantasy action movie, myself...

Yeah, Nemo is just far too cool. (And hey, I just realized where I've seen that one panel from the "Night Horse" story - "OH MAMA OH PAPA" - didn't Maurice Sendak drop that one into a scene in The Night Kitchen?)

Your choice on the vines. It's interesting how protective Twin's getting of Amanita due to this. Almost motherly. Except most people don't spank their mothers mercilessly. Or use them as guard dogs. Maybe not so motherly after all.

I'm not sure it shows in my art any more, but McCay is one of my early influences - I had this Smithsonian-published collection of old comics, including a few pages of Nemo, when I was a kid, and have been fascinated with the strip ever since. And yeah, I think Sendak's a McCay fan too; a lot of his work has that dream-like quality. Long time since I read Night Kitchen... maybe too long.

Vines!

And at some point I'll toss in the Chitin Queen encounter. Wow... suddenly the plot's thick enough to stand a spoon in.

okyno sits up from her meditative dormancy with a start, antennae set back in irritation. her mind replays the last few moments that woke her from her several-days lifepause. “their manners are atrocious, these decadent things,” she says as she looks out the window, a tiny dark speck in a far-below hint of a building.

a chitinous hand shapes a gesture of disapproval. “screaming their ownership of the ancient and hallowed ovon of the neke. i must consider my strategy, and i must act before the honor of the house neke is further destroyed.”
