Frances was walking at a quick pace. She had lost track of time while looking in one of the shops in the L.A airport, LAX. She had suddenly thought of checking her flight number to see if she was close to boarding time, and realized that the call for boarding had already been announced. She had no idea how much time she had left, but she was walking as fast as she could without actually running. In fact, she was almost at the point in panic where she didn’t care if she looked like a fool running across the airport. There had to have been people doing it many times before; plenty of people who nearly missed their flight.
She started jogging towards the direction she thought her gate was, hardly paying attention, when she ran into a fellow who was walking backwards and talking to his friends. She had actually seen them, the group of boys, but she had either misjudged the distance to avoid running into them, or the boy walking backwards had spontaneously jumped from one side to the other. Correction, he had bounced.
Frances apologized profusely as they attempted to get up on their feet. She was somewhat agitated and was about to start running again, but the young man helped her up and then bowed. The words that greeted her were an apology she was used to hearing, but never in person. She took a second to look at who it was, and to her shock, it was someone she recognized. It was no other than Masuda Takahisa from Johnny’s Entertainment’s NEWS. Along with him were Kato Shigeaki, Koyama Keiichiro, and Tegoshi Yuya, who were now crowded around these two people. Now, getting to her flight was the least of her worries, so she got to her feet and bowed as well.
“I’m very sorry!” She said in Japanese.
Massu’s initial response was “Eh??” But then he added hurriedly, “Ah, I should be the one who’s apologizing. Um…you speak Japanese?”
“No, I’m still learning. I’m actually heading to Japan on the JET program to learn and work at the same time.”
“I see, but your Japanese seems good.” The other’s agreed. At this point, Frances had just realized what a big deal it was to have met the stars she’d been listening to after first finding KAT-TUN and Kinki Kids among other Johnny’s idols.
“Thanks, but not really.” Frances smiled nervously; she couldn’t believe she was talking to Massu so conversationally. “I really should be going…” she started saying, but Massu cut her off with a question, “So, what will you be doing in Japan?”
She didn’t want to come off rude, so she answered, “I plan on teaching English, while studying more Japanese. I was lucky enough to get accepted into the JET program.”
“Ah, we were on a weekend vacation to Hawaii, we’re actually on our way back to Japan too.”
Frances glanced around; there were two key people missing from this group. One person in particular whom she wanted to meet for the sole purpose of agitating him, so she asked casually, “Is it just you guys, or did you have a bigger group?” She had hoped to sound casual, meaning to ask if they were part of a tour group or something.
Koyama answered this time as he was the most talkative out of the group, “Two of our other friends are actually at the gate reserving our seats. They’re probably too tired to walk around.”
Frances nodded; she could see Ryo and Yamapi just lounging while the others roamed around. Although, at the mention of the gate, she realized she was previously occupied with getting to her flight in time. Then again, there might never be another opportunity to talk to these people again. She was utterly conflicted with the idea, but in the end, she decided she had better be safe than sorry.
“Uh…I think I’m going to miss my flight…I’m so very sorry again. Have a save trip.” She was bowing her head slightly, when a thought occurred to her; there was such a glorious technology known as cell phones.
“Um, sorry again, but could I ask a favor of you?”
Massu and the others offered their best ‘I don’t know what to say to this stranger, but we can try’ looks, and Frances nervously asked, “Do you think there is any chance that I could keep in contact with you guys…in the future?”
Massu was already intrigued when the girl who had bumped into him spoke Japanese, something particularly rare in a place not your home. It was somewhat refreshing to see others learn the language, and this girl seemed bold. So, while Massu, who was always shy with girls, was digging for his phone from inside his huge, baggy, pant pockets; and Frances was digging it out of her large purse, Kato, Koyama, and Tegoshi couldn’t help but giggle like school girls, because they saw the similarities between the two. The boys were already starting to scheme and match-make, despite of such an initially random, and possibly fluke encounter with a foreigner.
Frances hadn’t noticed the muffled laughing, but blushed anyway; she was about to get Masuda Takahisa’s number, she couldn’t hide the smile. She was also thinking that these boys probably didn’t think that she knew who they were, and she wanted to keep it that way. She didn’t want to turn this coincidental meeting into looking like it was some fan encounter that was planned or something. Come to think of it, Frances was surprised no one was flocking around them; there had to be people who knew what they looked like. Then again, there was such a thing as respecting their privacy, which she totally understood.
Frances and Massu exchanged phone numbers and names, which were followed by a few, somewhat unnecessary and rushed introductions, of the other boys. She was about to ask for the other’s numbers as well, but Tegoshi spoke up, “Just call Massu up whenever you want to get in touch with us. He sees us all the time.” Tegoshi finished with his brilliant smile and waved goodbye as he took Massu by the arm and dragged him in the opposite direction. She could tell Massu was a little confused as to what was happening.
“I hope you catch your flight; have a safe one.” Koyama added. Him and Kato both bowed slightly and followed the other two in the other direction. Frances couldn’t help but laugh inside; the scene that had just played out was so typical of those NEWS members. If only she had met Ryo and Yamapi as well; she might have that chance later. First, she would have to catch the plane to Japan.
