Definitely not an easy thing to do, but I'm sure he and his wife appreciated it very much. When the sad day comes, you'll be able to look back and remember the evening you spent together, knowing that it must have helped him to spend a few hours in your company enjoying your friendship.

These things are always difficult, but it's so good to do them if you can.
Yet they are still the person you know, for all their troubles.

And I'm sure both he and his wife were very pleased to see you.

Yes, I'm so pleased I went. Another friend of mine passed away recently, and I hadn't even had a chance to speak to him when he visited work last year.
