31 July 1981Harry is a year old today, and even though we are secretly fighting a war, James and I took time to celebrate. I refused to let a mad man ruin something so special. Harry received more gifts than a toddler knows what to do with, and I'll have to kill those damned men for getting him that flying death contraption. A broom! At one! Merlin save me! Jamie says it's perfectly safe, but I am not so sure. All this time in this world and still I am surprised by what I don't know ( ... )

Oh, how lovely! And painful too -- the references to Remus and Peter in particular (and I'm thrilled that Peter is still included in the group, since he was and too many writers forget that). And Harry's first steps!

Utterly adorable. Thank you!

YAY! I am so glad you liked it. The prompt just struck me and I love dipping into canon sometimes, even with the DH material. I knew I had to do a little snippet with all of them because as bad a Peter ended up, he was, at one time, their friend.

That's how I've always seen it, and I tend to write the Marauders and Lily that way. It always jars when Peter isn't there.

Cecilia (Tom Riddle sen.'s fiance), Merope: encounterThe homeless woman is huddled in the road right at the turning to our townhouse. I doubt we would have noticed her had the horses not shied and caused the carriage to jolt horrendously ( ... )

Oh, how wonderfully creepy! Cecilia's voice is perfect, and the hints of snakes, and references to Tom's actions are fantastic. And that last paragraph is just heartbreaking. It makes me wonder where Cecily heard Merope's name before...

Thank you so much!

Yay! I did mean for it to be a little creepy, with Cecilia having a brush with magic but not knowing or understanding it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! :)

I love Cecelia stories, and you've got her voice down perfectly. I wonder if she gets home after this carriage ride and thinks about how lucky she was not to have ended up with Tom Riddle. Really well done.

Cecilia, Merope: encounter lyras November 4 2009, 09:40:41 UTC
I don't remember when I first glimpsed her. It must have been while Tom was courting me, because that was the only time I went near her house - if you could call it that, overgrown and filthy as it was. She lived in a scrubby, ramshackle place in a dip on the Riddle lands. I gather Tom's father had tried to evict the family, but had had no luck. In fact, Tom hinted that a few unpleasant events had put his father off the idea, although he laughed and said you wouldn't catch him falling for that superstitious rubbish ( ... )

I'm quite tickled that we picked the same prompt! :)

I like your Cecilia - she sounds exactly like a well-bred girl, with good intentions but also exuding that air of having a higher status.

I am so happy this prompt has inspired people! I love Cecilia's attitude here -- she's revolted, but she does, on some deep level, mean well. Of course, she can't possibly understand what her advice prompts Merope to do. Thank you!

Oooh, so mundane and chilling at the same time! I love how quietly powerful Tom is, and how even Slughorn finds him terrifying. And this sentence--

Tom smiles, power coiling like a viper around his spine.

--such a wonderful image, and so perfect for him. Thank you so much!
