Volume rendering: When you're drawing something with volume (like stripes on a tiger, hey) imagine an ant is crawling over the form and you're just following the ant with your drawing tool. Dumb-sounding advice, but it helped me... There must be a reason all my drawing teachers keep repeating it!
Also check out etching/pen+ink stuff from like, Charles Dana Gibson or Joseph Clement Coll, because they're dealing with rendering light, shade and pattern wrapping around pretty complex voluminous forms. It's good to examine how they broke it down and made it work even if you're not into their styles.
Sorry for the word dump, but I've gotten to the point where my knee-jerk reaction to "I wish I could draw _____" is to get totally overly helpful... :P
