It's been another miserable (weather-wise) day here in ole Oxford, so Katherine and I drive out to Wolvercote Cemetery to do something I'd been wanting to do - see Tolkien's grave.  Apparently it's a popular site, because there were sign-posts leading us in the right direction the whole way.  I expected more stuff to be on the grave (I remember ( Read more... )

I think I'm more jealous of that than seeing Gene Wilder, but in a much more clam way. Tolkein was - as it is, was, and shall be with all dorks - my hero in high school. In fact, I did my huge senior paper on the Silmarillion and comparitive Norse mythology therein.

That's a pretty darn cool idea for a paper! Tolkien's books are like the Bible to my dad, but I really only got into them very recently, and all I've read is the Holy Triology (plus The Hobbit!). :) Though it was sort of macabre, it was neat to see this spot - I've seen it in documentaries and stuff before. I was thinking of you when we were there, actually!

Holy Trilogy plus the Hobbit is a good start. Some of my favorite things of his is stuff he did for kids. He wrote all these elaborate Santa Claus cards for his kids with full-color illustration (Letters from Father Christmas) and he wrote a couple of kid short stories (Farmer Giles of Ham and Leaf by Niggle) which are just downright adorable.
Okay, I swear I'm getting off my soapbox. . .
