I know, it's the second challenge today! But when I came up with the idea we were sadly lacking in challenges, and you know you like challenges...
Ever watched an episode of your favourite show with a promising title, only to feel let down by the writers? Yes? Well, now it's your turn to re-write the episode/title the way you want it.
The basic premise of the challenge is that you may pick a fandom (or up to three fandoms if you're undecided, or want to write several stories), and I will then provide you with an episode title (for TV fandoms), chapter title (for book fandoms), DVD chapter title (for film fandoms) etc. You can then run wild - write a story, make art (sketch, painting, collage, wallpaper or manipulation), write/perform a song, make a soundtrack (cover art and track listing, but no illegally uploaded tracks) or make a video in your chosen fandom, based on that episode title. It doesn't have to bear any resemblance to the original beyond sharing the same title, but can simply be inspired by the title.
For example, if you chose to write a Smallville story, I might assign you the title 'Red' and you could write a story about Martha painting the town red in her college years, or a creepy tale explaining Lionel's penchant for red heads, or you could twist the actual episode premise.
Rare fandoms are particularly welcome, but I might need you to point me in the direction of more information about them if they're extremely rare. Crossovers are fine too, but obviously you'll only get one title!
If I get a lot of sign-ups in young fandoms like Lost or Veronica Mars, where there are a very limited number of episode titles, I may have to use future episode titles - please let me know when you're signing up if you prefer not to be given unaired episode titles.
I'm not going to put strict limits on size of entries - I'd prefer to see stories above 1000 words (but if you can write a clever alternate episode in 100 words, go for it). When it comes to art, then anything larger than an icon is fine.
All works should be stand-alone pieces - if it is part of a series that you are already working on, please make sure that it makes sense as a solo work.
Signing up starts now - please leave a comment on this post if you want to take part. If you don't have a live journal, then anonymous comments are fine, but please leave your name and email address in that case. I'll be accepting sign-ups until the Thursday 17th February, for those who like to decide these things at the last minute!
The challenge deadline is Saturday 19th February. Work may be posted as soon as you've finished it. All stories/art/videos will be linked to from the archive,
here, unless you request otherwise. If you don't have a site/LJ/suitable archive to post stories or art on, then I'll be happy to host them for you - just let me know in advance. Videos however will need to be hosted on your own site.
When you've finished and posted your work, please let me have the following details (either by commenting on this post or by
email):
Title:
Url:
Author/artist:
LJ name:
Email:
Fandom:
Pairing/characters:
Type of art (if relevant):
Rating:
Summary:
Once you've finished your first submission(s), you're welcome to come back for another title (finish one piece and I'll give you one more title, finish two pieces and you get two more titles, and if you finish all three you can have three more titles!)
Phew, I think that's covered everything.
Still got questions? Leave a comment below and I'll try to think up an answer.
ETA: As live journal is playing up so badly at the moment, and I know lots of you, like me, aren't getting email notifications, I'm posting a
master list of assignments here. You can use it as a reminder, or to check that I've got the details right - I'll update it daily.
ETA 2: Just to make it clear, the finished work must use the title that you're given as its title. So if I give you the title 'Hermione's Secret', then the finished piece must be entitled 'Hermione's Secret'.
