Gigantic spoilers for Bride of Re-Animator, and massive liberties taken with the ending thereof. Warning for, well... mad scientist/a dead lady. Thanks to the_wanlorn for identifying the vein!

Of course the doorbell would ring ten minutes into the most critical experiment of Herbert West's career.

"Get the door, Dan."

Dan's expression was just beginning to twitch into one of confusion and disappointment--clearly Herbert would have to repeat himself. As good an assistant as Dan Cain had turned out to be, it would take some time before he was sufficiently tractable to take their experiments to a higher level.

"I won't miss a chance to record my work in action. Get the door."

There was a long and sullen silence before Dan broke eye contact, tilting his head down in a quiet gesture of assent as he turned to make his way up to the foyer. He might have muttered something; Herbert didn't catch it, and he didn't particularly care.

Little quarrels were nothing. The work was everything.

The woman--his woman, his impossible, beautiful creation ( ... )

Hah, that's awesome. I do so enjoy the Bride, in all her creepy-sexy glory. :D

And this is selfish, but it makes me feel slightly less bizarre for trying to work out Herbert/the Bride last night.

I love this line.

Very well done. I love how Herbert's pride in his creation turns to girl-panic the moment she starts to speak and be a person.
