A Bearded Old Man on the Veranda

Fitzgerald’s was located in The Heights, a historical district in Houston. Once well-to-do, it was now a neighborhood of aging homes and businesses, inhabited mainly by young, barely employed or elderly nearly dead. It always struck me as being Houston’s version of Haight-Ashbury. Having never been to San Francisco, I’m probably just romanticizing ( Read more... )

It's becoming more clear with each story.
Each place becomes more defined, more "real".
And they take me back to such a sweet time.
The 1980s maybe a cliche on VH1, but I really do love them.
It really was a grand time, wasn't it? All over Texas. All over.

I love you madly.

It's funny that I have lived long enough to see my entire past turned into a cliche and mocked. The hippies of the 60's (I was a young teen wannabe), the 'me' generation of the 70's with its obsession with the 50's and disco (I didn't like either, but it couldn't help but get all over you) and the New Wave/Punk of the 80's. Big hair, funny clothes with zippers, drum machines and cheesy sounding keyboards. By the time they were over, I was definitely an adult (in age, at least) and could be mocked for that alone. It's a wonderful life.

And thank you, your insight is always welcome. Haven't we met at Club Foot?

That was such a great gig! What I recall was getting there early to set up and "sound check". It was typical hurry up and wait. Modern English managed to screw around with everything until the last minute, which gave us about 15 minutes to set our equipment in front of theirs, mic everything, tune Ric's piano and get our sound check before they opened the doors.

Fortunately, we had played there many times before and Tommy was familiar with the PA. Everything was totally dialed-in including the monitors when we walked onstage and began our set. I remember an enthusiastic crowd and feeling very satisfied with our show that night. I remember chatting with the bearded guy, but did not realize it was Gibbons! Chaz
