William shook for ten minutes before he managed to pull himself together long enough to put the phone back on the cradle and close Gabe’s bedroom door and then he was off like a shot, aching body aside, down the basement steps and scrambling under the bed with his blanket and pillow and lyrics and he spent the rest of the afternoon there, trembling, waiting for the inevitable thump of Gabe’s sneakers coming down the basement steps.
