I'm always amused and irked by that disconnect, like it's your job to magic up an unearned grade just _because_.

I sometimes wonder if anyone does bring these things up with the deparment, and gets a response of, "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" at their audacity from the chair in question. ;)

Sounds like the student knew they hadn't done the work and was just trying to find an easy way out. They should have done their work from the beginning if they wanted the A.

That happens at the high school level too. It’s very frustrating.
