It's been my personal experience that a lot of people have no idea how to respond to something like that, and rather than babble or say something that might accidentally and unintentionally hurt the speaker, a lot of people will just say nothing, even if their heart goes out to the person posting. Took me a long, long time to start to understand that just because people didn't reply didn't mean that people didn't care
