What exactly is prejudice?

I grew up poor, in hand-me-down clothes that didn't quite fit, and I carried 100 lbs more weight than I needed. This made school and high school a little hellish, to put it lightly. But at some point, you have to outgrow your adolescent fears. Still, thin rich white people terrify me. Even rich Christian-y types scare me. ( Read more... )

I know some people are turned off by wealth. That is, that wealthier people make them uncomfortable. And I guess in some situations, some people might even have that about race. But it surprises me that, as a conservative, you would have a fear or rich white Christians. Isn't that what our party is made up of? And aren't you Christian - and white - yourself?

We have been talking a lot about this in my church lately (well, in our college-aged group). My sister does a lot of work with international students, a majority of which are from the Middle East. Another girl in our group teaches at an international women's school that is predominately middle eastern women. They both see the damages done by Americans who see all Middle Easterners as potential terrorists, or responsible for the actions of a few in their country (or 3 or four countries over from where their great grandparents were born..). Its so sad to hear how these students are being deeply affected by little (and big) actions from people grouping them all together. I don't know what its like to walk out in public and have people distrust me, have them watch me more closely than others, to hear them make comments about my country, to feel unwanted ( ... )
