DAZZLING laser lights, sharp songs and pointy witches hats yesterday launched the $20 million Australian production of the Broadway-blitzing Wicked.

Out of the dry-ice fog of the Regent's Plaza Ballroom emerged six stars who have won lead roles in the musical, which opens at the Regent Theatre on July 9.

Maggie Kirkpatrick, best known as "The Freak" in the 1980s TV series Prisoner, strode into the coveted role of Madame Morrible, headmistress of Shiz University where Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch become roommates.

Rob Guest, who played the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera for seven years, beat hundreds of hopefuls including Bert Newton to the role of the Wizard of Oz.

Rob Mills, a finalist in the first Australian Idol, won the romantic lead of Fiyero, the prince who falls in love with both the witches, announced in New York last week as Lucy Durack and Amanda Harrison.

Idol Anthony Callea, absent because of filming for Channel Seven's It Takes Two, will play Boq, the munchkin besotted with Glinda.

"Finally, being vertically challenged has its benefits," Callea said in a text to Wicked producer John Frost. "I look forward to becoming Australia's favourite munchkin."

Bookings open February 25 on 1300 795 012.
