So, I'm taking time out from my ridiculous busyness to go to a party with some of my classmates at the home of one of them (good networking opportunity as well as socializing). It's ostensibly a cocktail party, and Colleen (the hostess) has said we can bring food if we'd like. I already have a reputation amongst these classmates for being a good ( Read more... )

Bruschetta is always a good idea.

I'd totally do bruschetta if it were summer, but the tomatoes right now suck ass. Same reason I probably won't do guacamole (although for that I'm willing to compromise and use the Trader Joe's packaged fresh salsa, even if the tomatoes aren't the greatest). But thank you for the excellent suggestion! :-D

Cocktail franks:
6 oz. tomato paste
2 c. water
2 Tbsp each - minced onion, Worchestershire sauce, brown sugar
1 Tbsp each - white wine vinegar, molasses
1 tsp each - lemon juice, dry mustard
1/2 t - salt
1 lb. cocktail franks

Bring to boil, stirring, add franks, simmer 10 min.

Cocktail franks are impressive?

I have an onion dip that you serve with crackers. It's always a big hit. Let me know if you want the recipe, it's so easy and takes 1/2 hour to cook.

Is it hot or cold? It sounds like a potential winner! Thanks!

Hot Onion Dip
(From my friend Rebecca)
(I never measure when I make this, I just add the different ingredients.)
½ cup mayo
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
1 cup grated Swiss cheese
1 cup onion chopped (Vidalia if in season)
Dash of Tabasco (optional I never use)
Mix all ingredients
Spray baking dish with Pam. Sprinkle top with extra Parmesan cheese.
Bake at 350⁰ for 30 mins.
Serve with Wheat Thin Crackers.

This also sounds great, but whether or not I could use it would depend on the availability of Colleen's oven to heat it up. I'll have to check with her. However, I will totally make this the next time WE have anyone over

As long as it doesn't have any seafood in it, that might just do the trick! Can you pass the recipe along, please? Thank you!

I don't think I've ever even been to a real cocktail party... but some of these look fabulous:

Wow, those ARE gorgeous! But truth be told, while Colleen called this a cocktail party, I don't think it's a "Mad Men"-style soiree since the gal throwing it is a 29 year old grad student and teacher, the other attendees will all be grad students and teachers, and I am likely to be the oldest attendee by nearly 20 years. LOL!
