[this is the part of the job she hates] I'm not going to beat around the bush, you're my friends, so...it's what we feared, it's cancer, specifically a type of non-small cell carcinoma. The good news is I believe we caught it in time. We have a few options for treatment. The main treatment is surgery to remove the tumor and a portion of the infected lung. But, I can start you on medication that can shrink the tumor. I will suggest treatments in the hyperbaric chamber to repair and strengthen your lungs and hopefully to prevent recurrence.
[Garrett nods. Chapel had pre-warned him a while ago about the treatment and it's side-effects. Still, though hearing that it's now a reality is still frightening.]
[lays a hand on Garrett's shoulder and wraps her arm around Becky's back as she listens] What does this mean over-all? [She knows there have been great strides in the curing of cancer over the centuries, but, it's still a scary disease in any time]
[Chapel glances at Garrett] Since we caught it early enough, it's stage one, which is good in terms of prognosis. If you keep up with the treatment regiment and the surgery goes well, the odds are better that you'll live to drive us all crazy for a long time.
[that gets a slight snort from Garrett]
When do you want to start the medication? [Rebecca asks]
[Chapel nods again; holds up a prescription] Today. One tablet with food. [leans forward] Now Garrett, this is really important, because alcohol can make medications less effective, you'll need to cut down on how much you drink, okay?
[sighs, then nods] Yeah. [since the asthma attack, he's tried really hard to cut down, it's been hard, but at least he's trying]

She smiles at Becky, "and we will do our best to not encourage him to drink any more than perhaps a drink with dinner."
