Gatchina!!! You are living my experience circa 2001!!!!!! Except I avoided Americans and Canadians like the plague and left Russia 30 lbs lighter looking like an emaciated Russian crackhead in Adidas pants from Gostiniy Dvor and all but I loved it.
If I turn to my right at this moment, I can see the Russian trash experience. There are 2 men and a woman who arrived from Novgorod to stay at the Inn. They are, of course, drunk at 11am. One of the Sergeys' took a bouquet and proposed to the group of Finnish girls that they keep him company. The experience is complete with the bad B.O., smell of vodka, and lack of dental hygiene! They also, asked, if a girl was included in the price of the room.
That said, I think the people in the city itself have changed quite a bit. Most of my Russian friends dress normally in Zara, Benetton, etc... and oddly, not one of them likes shots of vodka. This means, I have to compensate by drinking shots with one of my 5 house mothers.

The whole zolotoy molodezh thing wasn't as rampant when I was there but I have been told it has gotten rather obnoxious.
