*sigh* I don't even know where to begin, but I think I'm gonna have to start from the day after because I need to write this whole experience down and make record of it.
Beware: FUCKING LONG ASS entry, lots of blurry cellphone pics and my weird narrative.
Ok so, I was pretty nervous about going to Mexico City for the concert, ngl. One, because I was gonna see 30 Seconds to Mars OMG, and two because well, Mexico City has a bad reputation. It's a FUCKING ENORMOUS city, and it's known for being insecure and a lot is said about it, so me and my sis going alone was a bit nerve racking. Luckily, one of the Echelon girls named Eve, who lives near Mexico City, offered to pick us up at the bus station and let us crash at her place for the night. It was so sweet of her to open her home to us like that, and having her helping us made the trip twice as easy and safe. I'll be forever thankful to her for this. <3
A few pics prior to the trip, while we were getting ready.
We couldn't enter the National Auditorium (where the concert would take place) with any large bags so this is all I took with me. Ivana not included lol.
My sis getting ready.
I, of course, had to wear flannel in honor of Mr. Cockatoo Hair.
We arrived to Mexico City thursday August 26 quite early, at around 7:30 p.m. We almost didn't make it thanks to the huge assholes in my town's bus company, but everything worked out in the end ad we were only 30 minutes later than we had expected to arrive in MX City. We thought the bus station there was going to be huge but it really wasn't and we found our way easily. We also encountered a lovely bookstore there and looked around while we waited for the other Echelon people to arrive. I had to contain myslef from buying this awesome Stephen King book because I didn't know if I was going to have any money left for it, given the fact that we were kinda short on cash.
But anyway, we sat down and put up our Echelon MX sign and soon our fellow Echelon started to arrive.
Left to right: Denise, Dulce and Venus. They are such lovely girls! I couldn't get over Venus's accent! It was soooo cool! She's from waaaay south of Mexico and she almost sounded like a foreigner. She's super perky and nice. Dulce is so cool too, a bit more reserved but still so nice. Dennise was really cheerful and talkative, she had been to the previous Mars show in 2007 and told us her experience since this was everyone else's first time seeing Mars, so that was really cool of her.
Venus with her yellow sign.
Laura and Daniel. Laura is quite a trip! She's so bubbly and fun and a huge fan too. I liked her a lot as well as Daniel, one of the few Echelon guys that were with us that night, he's awesome.
I really love the fact that as soon as we found each other at the bust station we clicked instantly and started talking like friends instead of strangers, it was so great.
After everyone was there, we still had to wait like two hours for Eve to come, pick us up and take us to the Auditorum VIA SUBWAY. I was kinda excited to ride the subway, I won't lie, but I didn't know it'd be so tiring lol. It's like a huge maze and there's a lot of walking and going up and down stairs, but it was fun though because we were all amazed by it.
Kool Kidz in the subway. The girl behind Daniel is Eve, our tour guide! XD
After 30 min riding the subway we got to the National Auditorium, at around 12:00 p.m. We rested for a bit and saw that not a lot of people were there yet so Eve suggested we go to the Chapultepec Zoo, a famous zoo in Mexico city, which was only like 10 minutes away from the Auditorium and there we could pass the time and get something to eat.
The National Auditorium.
The Chapultepec lake inside the zoo. So very, very pretty.
It had been son long since I had Mc Donald's. The fries were good. <3
My sis with a big panda lol.
So we did that, walked some more, got tired a bit more and headed back to the Auditorum at aprox. 3:30 p.m. Whe we got there we saw that more people had arrived and I actually saw Gabo and Macarena, two mexican MTV VJ's, being interviewed or some shit on camera, which was pretty cool. I now regret not asking for a pic with Gabo cuz I think he's great. Anyway, we sat down outside and waited for the rest of the Echelon people to arrive, and slowly they did. It was awesome to meet them in real life. I mostly just know them from twitter or the official forums, so it was a bit strange, but awesome nonetheless. Soon our group got pretty big, and there were like 20 of us when a member of the MTV staff approched us and asked if he could record us jumping and screaming and making noise for the camera. We obviously said hell fucking yeah, so we got up and did just that. After that, another MTV VJ named Diego came and started interviewing us and asking about the Echelon and stuff. Suddenly he says "Ok quick! Favourite Mars song!" And starts passing around the mic, and I was just like "....eh...Attack!" O_O! Yeah, he caught us by surprise, but I really hope they show that on tv because it was great. The interview was almost over when I felt someone tugging my shirt, and when I turned around I saw none other that the awesome
purplejellybeen a.k.a Alma!
Me and Alma.
I'd known her for about two years, and I actually added her here in LJ prior to knowing anything about her being an Echelon. It was sooooooooo awesome to meet her finally. She's SUPER tall, but her height equals her awesomeness. She had just came back from the 30STM signing and was lucky enough to get Shannon's signature on her hand! How cool is that? This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
After meeting her, we practically spent the rest of the evening together. We finally got in line to get in the venue at aroooouund... 5 p.m. We were told since Mars were going the be the first ones to play, we the Echelon would be the first one to enter and get the front rows. It wasn't anything like that at the end. We were in line for about another hour and a half probably, and while we were from the first few people that got in that whole process was COMPLETE MADNESS. Everyone wanted to be front row obviously, so it was like a pack of wild animals running and crushing people lol.
The Auditorium's lobby.
Alma with her ticket and Shannon's signature on her hand, waiting in line.
Inside the Auditorium's lobby, waiting in line. The red doors shown lead to the set of stairs in the next picture.
As you can see, the people in front of us at least were seating down on the stairs, we had to wait standing up. FREAKING NIGHTMARE because we were so tired by then.
The red doors you see in the back are the entrance to the Auditorium, that's where the madness happened and I was actually crushed against those doors when we got in. The guards helped me though and pulled me out lol.
Once inside there were two pit areas on each side of the stage, we ended up in the left pit RIGHT INFRONT OF THE MOTHERFUCKING STAGE. It was unreal, Alma and I looked at each other and were like OH MY GOD WE'RE TOUCHING THE STAGE WITH OUR HANDS. Incredible I tell you.
This was our view of the stage.
View of the back of the Auditorium.
We stood there in the pit for about half an hour more, TIRED AS HELL, and the guards wouldn't let us sit down at all. In the pit we met two dudes and a girl who were also Echelon but we didn't see in line nor anywhere else and they were pretty cool. We five were the only Echelon in the pit, everyone else was on the other side or infront of the stage. I think overall everyone had a great view. And so we're standing there and a bomb is dropped on us: it's rumored that after all, Mars isn't going to be opening, they're gonna go last. First Smashing Pumpkins, then the mexican band Zoe, and then Mars. We weren't happy at all because we were soooo tired and were just ready to see them play and bail. But that was exactly what MTV didn't want, and as most of the audience was there for Mars, they were afraid the after them everyone was going to leave, so they switched them.
At 8 p.m the show finally started , Gabo came out as the host and presented Smahing Pumpkins as rumored. At first the crowd wasn't really responding to them, tbh, and there wasn't as much noise as you would think being the SP who were playing. Even Billy Corgan noticed and asked "What's going on?" lol. I gotta say though, the drummer, the 19 yr old kid or something, is sooooo good. He played a small solo and rocked it, it was one of my favourite moments of their set. Sadly, I didn't know most of their songs so I couldn't sing, only jump. Billy came to our side of the stage, and it was surreal how close he was cuz he even got on he knees while playing the guitar. Alma even held his hand for a bit, and said it felt really soft lol. After they finished the set the crowd started chanting the typical "One more song! One more song!" so Billy came out with the acoustic guitar and started playing a song, but he was interrupted by some wresteling dudes from the WWE or something. The whole sketch was so bizarre, no one saw it coming. They threw Billy in the air and started wrestling on stage, and we were all like ".... o_O wtf". Then some mexican wrestelers came out and "saved" Billy lol. Again, bizarre. After that was over, the whole band came out and said "So you want one more song!?" And they proceded to play Zero, the only song I knew fully lol, and it was a nice ending to their set, everyone went wild with that song.
A few pics of the Smashing Pumpkins
One band down, I thought. My legs and back were killing me, we were sooo tired. And the guards finally saw it and let us sit for like 15 min. and after that Gabo came out again and started throwing t-shirts to the crowd and making jokes and shit. Too bad I didn't catch any t shirts, they were kinda cool. Up next was Zoe. Freaking borefest, and the worst part is that I had to be standing up pretending to enjoy the show because of all the cameras there. I knew zero songs from them, the members were drinking on stage and already a bit drunk. The vocalist was dancing so awkwardly I felt embarassed for him. Though they had a bit more crowd than Smashing Pumpkins, and more people were singing, I was still bored as hell. I was only thinking of what would come next and that gave me strength. :D There are a bunch of greater mexican bands (for example Kinky) and they had to pick the one with all the fucking hipster fans.
But anyway, a few pics of Zoe just because.
They didn't do encore, thank Godga.
AND SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... Mars was finally up next. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of anxiety and excitement that came over me when I saw the technicians setting up their equipment. Alma and I are were just like "OMG THEY'RE NEXT OMG THEY'RE NEXT!!!" They took about 20 min. setting up everything, which were the longest 20 min eeeeeveeeeer. Gabo came out and gave out more stuff, and kept teasing us about Mars, but we took the time to rest for a bit.
The white curtain they use was pulled down and we could see a lot of movement from techinicians behind it until FINALLY, at 11:00 p.m., THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AND JUST THE LIGHT BEHIND THE CURTAIN WAS LEFT ON. Everyone screamed so loud! Neither the Pumpkins nor Zoe could've gotten that reaction. It was insane! Escape started playing and the whole auditorium roared. We could hear Shannon's drums and theeeenn omg, theeeeeen I saw the freaking blonde mohawk through the curtain slowly getting closer to the mic. I swear I've never been so excited about anything in my life ever before than when I saw that head of hair. The feeling it's indescribable.
Tomo's guitar and in the middle Jared's shadow.
The Thiiiiiiiiiis iiiiiis waaaaaaar scream at the end of Escape was SO epic, and Jared stood there while we did it like the BOSS he is. The sight of him, flesh and blood, was the most amazing feeling ever. He was there! Like.. THERE! A few meters away from ME! I know I sound so freaking pathetic, but seriously it was just so unreal and beautiful.
Night of the Hunter started and it felt like the whole venue caught fire, Jared was screaming "Jump, jump, jump!" and I think literally everyone was jumping. The feeling of euphoria was surreal. By the time the Mars set started I was almost dead beat. I couldn't jump for that long because my legs hurt so bad, so while I catched my breath I took pics and videos. I know I'm gonna sound like the biggest fangirl I am but the three of them are DIVINE. Pictures don't do them justice, they're so amazing! Jared was wearing the tighest jeans lol and his ass looked so nice! I was dying slooooowlyyyy from that sight. Shannon has the biggest arms ever, and his tattoo is beautiful. Tomo was right in front of me and rocks the guitar like no other, his hair was epic and he just looked like a rock god.
Attack was next and I seriosuly didn't think they were gonna play it, so it was a nice surprise because it's one of my favourite songs from them. Vox Populi followed and I think this was the song he played with Artemis. THAT GUITAR IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO EPIC. Seeing it up close just makes it 10000 time more beautiful. When he sang the line "... ever wanted just STOP!" They actually stopped and Jared started talking about how much he liked Mexico and you know how he likes to talk like that. So incredibly dreamlike to hear his voice right there!
At some point, don't remember exactly which song was it, Tomo came so close to where I was, actually bent over a bit and you could hear him screaming at us " Come on! Come on!". I'll never forget that, being that close to him was phenomenal.
One of my favourite songs from the whole show was Search and Destroy, which came after Vox Populi, because first, it's one of my fav songs of the album and second, Jared stopped it TWICE to make sure everyone was jumping, I loved that! It made it 100000 times more powerful. Next was A Beautiful Lie, everyone saaaaaang loud omg! This is War was next and at the beginning Jared made us pump our fist in the air and repeat like 20 times "Thiiis iis waaar!! Thiiis iis waaar!!" God, the energy when we were doing that was incredible! And to top it all off, when the last chorus of TIW started A MASSIVE TRIAD SLOWLY CAME DOWN FROM THE CELING BEHIND JARED. THEY USED THAT THING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MEXICO! EEEEEEEEEEPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIC IIIII TEEEEEELLL YOUUUUUUUUUUUU! Omg, I'm getting
chills.
Anyway, next obviously was 100 Suns, gorgeous. Next, From Yesterday acoustic, the short version. Jared was impressed by how everyone was singing that one, you could tell by his face lol. Next The Kill, half acoustic and half full band as usual. I was expecting Jared to throw himself to the crowd but it didn't happened. Probably the best for his safety anyway because a bracelet he was wearing had already been destroyed by the fans.
Dat ass.
Closer to the Edge was up next and omg omg omg this song. It's so ironic because the first time I heard this song I hated it so much. It ended up being my second favourite from the show. Jared made us scream "No, no, no, no!" as practice a bunch of times before the song started, and the nonono's of the song were so powerful and fantastic. Again, I swear everyone in the audience was doing them, even the ~haterz. The Giant Triad in the celing was all colors in this song, I remember that soooo clearly cuz it looked gorgeous.
Theeeeeen... the last song. Kings and Queens. There couldn't have been a more epic way to end the show. The kids who were lucky enough to go on stage had been previously picked out as they came out from backstage, but Jared did pick a few from the audience. That was kinda messed up because of how unfair it was, but whatevs. The choruses were so so so powerful. And right at the end, when the "... weeeee are the kiiiiiiings, we are the queeeeeeeeeeeens!!" part came, they shot white strands of confetti into the air. ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING. Everything from the confetti falling, the epic song playing and the crowd singing along was just the perfect ending for the show. I actually felt very nostalgic that it was coming to an end so quickly.
We screamed "one more song", but the techs were already out picking everything up, so we realize they weren't coming out. We left the pit and gathered outside the venue with the rest of the Echelon. I encountered Eve in my way out and she was in tears. The epicness actually made her cry, and she wasn't the only one. A lot more people cried too, but strangely, I didn't feel like crying at all during nor after the show. Back home I thought I would cry if I ever saw them live, but instead was the overwhelming feeling of euphoria that came over me.
All the Echelon hugged each other, we said our goodbye's and, as I was gonna spend the night at Eve's house, I went out and looked for her. Her parents picked us up and were super nice about us staying with them.
Alma and I after the show (lol me).
Beautiful and colorful Triad after the show.
And that was it, my perfect day ended at exactly 2:00 a.m.: tired as fuck, sored all over, but having spent the most amazing day with the most amazing people.
Some more details:
- I took some of the confetti as souvenir lol.
- Jared said "Gracias!" at the end of every song and I diiiiieeed.
- At some point he said "Te quiero" refering to Mexico.
- Shannon jumping is adorable.
- Vicki took a pic of Tomo from my side of the stage but I didn't see her. :/
- I could see part of Jared's torso when he lifted his hands and jacket and I diiiieeeeeeed.
- I only saw Tim once I think, cuz he spent the whole show in the opposite corner far, far away from me.
- Jared forgot the lyrics of Vox Populi; he started the first verse of the song with ".. ever wanna be free!" which is the second verse lol. It was so adorable because he did notice, made a funny face but kept going and let us sing lol. Bless him.
As I've always said, Mars is a different kind of band. It goes waaaay beyond music, and it's more about a sense of belonging and a community that is there for you no matter what. We are united by something so special and so valuable that it's really hard to describe unless you've felt it for yourself. It's something that I will cherish forever, and that I want to be part of until they day I die. The Echelon and Mars have given me inspiration, strenght, awesome friends, a place where I feel welcome and I think that is the most important thing. It's not only music, and records, and shows, it goes waaay deeper and there's no price for that
Can't wait to see this shit on tv goddamn!
Oh and also, while browsing JaredLetoOnline for pics of the WS I found one where you can see my hand, it'll give you a good idea of where I was:
And lastly a few short clips I managed to record:
TL;DR I saw 30 Seconds to Mars live August 26 at the MTV World Stage in Mexico City and it fucking rocked! Best day ever!
