I don't remember how many people know this, but for over the last month I've been walking home from work, about a 3 1/2 mile trek. I have gotten much flack from the people I work with. Only one of them actually thought it was a good idea, a handful have flat out made fun of me, most seem very confused and give me a "you must be insane," look. But ( Read more... )

They think you are crazy for exercising? Wow. How can walking possibly be bad for you ( aside from the instance that your doctor has told you not to exert yourself)?

Do you like hiking too?

I like hiking, but I looooove backpacking. I've been camping since I was a baby, hiking in the woods since I could walk and backpacking since I was 14. Sadly though I no longer have anyone to go backpacking, or even pseudo-camping, with. To me, going to a 'campground' where you stay in a cabin that is fully outfitted with electricity and indoor plumbing does not really count as camping, but maybe I'm just too old school. I still want to take a few months off from work and go on a through hike of the Appalachian trail one day (http://www.nps.gov/appa/As far as people thinking I'm crazy, it's not that they think I'm nuts for exercising, it's how I choose to do it. They have it so ingrained in them that if you are going to go anywhere outside of your house that you *have* to get into a car and drive. As for me, it seems silly to walk/jog/run in place on a tread mill. Or repeatedly pick up and put down metal plates. For me, I need to have a reason to be doing something, there must be a goal and a purpose. To exercise for the sole sake of ( ... )
