I remember the first time I read this poem was in English class last February - I was THIS close to excusing myself from class because I was about to cry. I don't know what it is about this poem. I think it's the simplicity of the syntax, the shortness of the lines such as "Love is so short, forgetting is so long." and the imagery of the vastness of the stars that evoke a feeling of smallness and loneliness. It's so honest and simple and raw.
So beautiful.

I love this one, too. It's one of my favourites. And, like you, I'm drawn to the simplicity of the verse. I love how he can convey so much in such short lines, and so eloquently at that.

By the way, do you speak Spanish? o_o

I was just curious: do you primarily read Neruda in Spanish or English? o_o
