Looking up, Cade smiled at Wilson. "Hey, no I haven't been waiting long," he said, wrapping his hand around the beer he'd brought. Ten minutes wasn't really that long and Cade had been entertaining himself by observing the other people in the club. "Was there trouble at work?"
"Just a problem with Mr. Higgins' meds. We got it sorted out, eventually." Wilson looked around until he spotted a waitress. He gave her wave, then turned back to Cade.
"It just goes to show why being a doctor and having a social life don't go well together. You never know when a patient is going to go sour," he said with a rueful smile. It was a fact that his wives always started out being sympathetic to and ended up resenting. Of course it hadn't always been patients taking up his time. Often it had been House and in hindsight he supposed his wives had good reason to resent that. At the time, though, it had simply been another reason for Wilson to avoid going home.
"Sometimes I think I should've become a dermatologist. Not many life-threatening crises in dermatology."
"Ah, yes, but what satisfaction is curing a rash in camparison to helping someone beat cancer? You've gotta look at the bright side, I always say," Cade said with a purposefully smarmy smile. "Not that I'm knocking dermatologists. I'm sure they find satisfaction...one way or another."
Up on stage, the jazz band was setting up and Cade watched them curiously for a moment before looking back at Wilson. "So...is it okay if I call you James in social settings? Or do you prefer Wilson?"
"Some days I'd settle for curing a few rashes." Wilson shook his head, mildly amused. That had almost sounded like something House would say...except House wouldn't have anything good to say about oncologists either. He could be a real snob sometimes.
"Wilson is better. Not many people call me James anyway. Ex-wives, mostly," he said with a rueful smile. He truly didn't mind if Cade dropped the 'doctor' in a purely social setting, but Wilson was the name with which he was most comfortable. James belonged pretty exclusively to his ex's along with a few other acquaintances. And Jimmy was reserved for his family. And House, who never had learned to respect boundaries.
Wilson turned to the side as the waitress reached their table. He looked up over his shoulder to give his order, then pointed at Cade. "You need another or are you good?"
