This evening I went with some friends to see Inception (fantastic movie GO SEE IT NOW!) and on my way home drove past the high school in my neighborhood. There was a kid ( Read more... )

This is...

I made a resolution the other day, not quite the same thing, but-- I promised myself as soon as I can support two people, I will apply to adopt a teenager.

Also about the book stuff-- still working on it. Kind of stuck, actually. In case you were curious.

Ha! Don't feel bad I was just thinking today that I have not written ONE WORD! in two weeks. I'm off tomorrow so thats the plan;-)
As for adoption, I had a few friends growing up who we're in foster care and I always thought that would be a cool thing to do so kudos to you! Thats awesome!

First, thank you for doing the right thing, even if you weren't sure. Second, thank you for talking about it.

In Florida, the Dept. of Children and Family Services runs a network of "safehouses" - places runaway/homeless teens can go that are safe and clean; they can wash up, get something to eat, get a change of clothes, get some sleep, talk to a counselor (if they choose to), etc. I've been a volunteer "manager" in one of them for almost nine years, and I've heard more stories of how people ignored, tried to take advantage of, or threatened them than stories of how they were shown some basic kindness.

I wish there were more people out there like you.

Sincerely,
Caera

Thanks for reading! Believe me my friends have made me aware of the fact that this is a long A$$ entry so I'd be happy if even one person made it through the whole thing. I have no idea if safe houses like the one you described exist in California, but I'll definitely be checking on that soon. The only model I've heard of that a city got behind is the one in Portland, OR where free services are offered to Runaway/Homeless kids. I'm glad to see there are other places out there, and how awesome of you to work somewhere where you can really make a difference!
Thanks
