Eugene hadn’t had a decent night’s sleep since long before Peleliu, and certainly hasn’t had one since. Before, it was the guilt that kept him awake for hours, nagging at his very core, and the occasional nightmare about Sid. Then he finally joined up, and no matter how bone-tired he was at the end of the day, he found himself unable to sleep from nerves and anticipation. Then- well, then the war happened, he got his first real taste of combat in Peleliu, and that very first night in the foxhole with Snafu and Oswald- for the two, maybe three hours of sleep he probably got when he wasn’t being constantly awakened by the sound of gunfire, bombs and mortars- that night, the nightmares started
