It's the first time in a year that Euphie's seen snow, and while she's not really sure if it's real (after all, how can snow fall from a sky that doesn't really exist?) it's nice all the same. They're all snowed in at Lelouch and Suzaku's, but thankfully there's fire in the fireplace and the house is warm.
Shirley's asleep upstairs, and the rest of them are in the living room, cups of hot cocoa still steaming from when Euphie made them earlier, and she's not really entirely sure where C.C. got the alcohol from, but it does make the cocoa taste interesting and it is warming.
"I want to go outside," she says suddenly, head lifting as she sets down her cocoa, and is already slipping out from between C.C. and Suzaku, still clad in her pajamas, going for her snow boots, not minding that they look rather ridiculous paired with the thin pajama pants with stars printed on them. "It's the first snow, Lelouch, remember? We have to!"
For a moment, everyone either glances between Lelouch and Euphie, who is shoving bright pink gloves on her hands with an expectant look on her face.
"...Yes, but it's cold," Lelouch says weakly, already knowing what that conniving thoughtful look on C.C.'s face means as she stands up and grabs for his arm, dragging him off to the coat closet. "Witch," he tries to protest, but even C.C. can tell his heart really isn't into it, smirking.
Suzaku's already standing, heading to where Euphie is, grasping her arm lightly with a vague tilt to his lips as she almost slips in the clunky boots, giggling. "Careful," he cautions lightly, and lets her stretch up against him to wrap a scarf around his neck, a half-laugh escaping when she tickles his nose with it teasingly, before hopping back. "It's a tradition, then?"
"It was. When we were younger," Lelouch answers distractedly, moving away from C.C. with a smaller coat in his hands, heading to Rolo, offering his jacket out to him with a small smile. Euphemia grins happily at the flash of surprise and pleasure that flickers across Rolo's face. Sometimes, she thinks that he automatically assumes that he's never invited to go out with them, but it'll get better with time, she knows.
"Don't forget gloves," Euphemia reminds, and hands him the gloves from the basket, ruffling his hair gently, tugging a floppy hat over his head and ears while his hands are occupied.
Opening her mouth to say something else, she laughs abruptly as C.C. opens the door and tugs her out, into the snow, ignoring someone's protests of Euphie being out there with just pajamas on. "She won't freeze," C.C. says, with a certain tone that makes Euphemia think she's implying less than appropriate ways to keep her warmed up and-- and she'd better not think about that right now, really!
"She's right, it's not that bad!" Euphemia calls, and is already balling up snow in her hands, watching the doorway for when Lelouch comes through, waiting for him to clear before tossing it and-
"Brother-?" Rolo calls from inside, prompting Lelouch to twist and turn back inside, and Suzaku to pass him, getting a face-full of snow.
For a moment, everyone pauses, before C.C. breaks out into laughter, devious and amused, while Suzaku wipes snow off his face and Euphemia just stares, her gloves held against her mouth with shock. "I'm so sorry," she breathes, eyes wide, watching Lelouch and Rolo slide out from around him, the shorter boy giving Suzaku's snowy face an appraising look before continuing on with an offhanded, "I'm sorry I missed that."
It's cold enough that the first few breaths almost hurt, a low, steady ache in her lungs, but she doesn't mind, moving closer to tug her gloves off and cup Suzaku's chilled cheeks, an apologetic look on her face. "That was meant for Lelouch," Euphemia says, and somewhere off to the side, starting to make a snowman, Lelouch makes a disgruntled little noise. "You're alright, aren't you?"
Of course he is- they both know it, and he's not insulted that she asks, more worried about the chill and the fact that her hands are getting cold from touching his face. Both his hands rise, cupping hers over his face, and he smiles a little bit, pressing chilled lips to her palm briefly. "Of course, your highness," he assures, watching relief slide over her face, and he bites back a worried comment about it being too cold for her, knowing she's stubborn and won't want to go inside just yet.
In the end, there are two half-made snowmen in the front yard (C.C. ends up getting bored with making one, and Lelouch's perfectionism gets the better of him, the middle ball too large for him to lift, and his pride too great for him to ask Suzaku for help), and one full snowman, a little lopsided, and with six fingers on one of his stick arms. Rolo's hat goes on the snowman's head, and C.C. puts rocks for his eyes, Lelouch carefully placing a nose and mouth on him, while Suzaku puts his scarf and gloves on (they would have been Euphie's gloves, but he'd insisted on using his own, considering he didn't want her getting chilled any further).
They head back inside, to cool cups of cocoa, soggy pajama legs, and rosy cheeks, and Euphemia finds out that her suspicion of all of them being able to fit on the couch if they really, really try, is quite correct, though C.C. opts for placing a pillow on the floor and sitting on it, leaning between Euphemia's legs, chin resting against her knee, instead, so Euphie can sit between Lelouch and Suzaku.
"We can't stay like this," Suzaku points out, shifting a little when Euphemia hums softly and tucks a blanket in and around him, gentle, making sure they're all covered and warm, the cocoa forgotten for the moment.
"For a little while, we can," Euphemia answers, voice thick with sleep, running her fingers through C.C.'s hair while holding Suzaku's hand with her free one, tipping her head to lean against Lelouch's shoulder. In the end, they do fall asleep like that, for a little while, anyway, until the fire burns itself out and it's late enough where Rolo and Lelouch retreat to Rolo's room, and Suzaku goes with C.C. and Euphie to his, the princess sandwiched between the two of them.
