The drinks lining the fridge were wrapped in labels that ranged from red to purple in the rainbow scale. It was worse than the produce that seemed to have fruits and vegetables that were similar but different from what Mylene recognized. She picked up one of the bottles, making no sense of scribbles or words on the label, and shook it curiously before dropping it into her basket.
It was so peaceful here, so peaceful that it was unbelievable that they’d have any need for help. It was a place where wind blew and water flowed and the whispering creaks that were in some of the older buildings only seemed to add to the serenity.
At least it was until the creak became a screech and the screech became a scream.
Mylene winced, glancing around at the sudden racket. What could it be, where was it coming from? The walls shook, cans and boxes falling from shelves first before entire shelves collapsed. And then the ground began to shake.
Like taking off from a Valkyrie, without being properly strapped in, Mylene thought. She dropped the basket she was holding to and braced herself against the wall. Up, up, up, the move slid against her palm, scoring the skin of her palm until she collapsed onto the floor.
A place to sleep. A friend to talk to. And now the only thing left that Taijima needed was something to eat. Luckily, it seemed as if the food around here was still affordable, even for a student like him. Best of all, a lot of it was stuff that Taijima recognized as well. He was really thankful for that last fact. He couldn't imagine what he'd do if he had to eat all that fantasy movie food, like freeze dried, double-processed turkey. Or was that sci-fi?
Arms loaded down with various packets of edibles, and smiling brightly, Taijima had barely managed to take a step before the ground started to shake and he fell backwards. Since he had been about to take a step as well, he tipped over sideways, losing his balance. Taijima let out a cry of surprise as he was rattled around, crashing into various things, until his backside smacked into a wall.
"Ow!"
There was no dust when it settled, when they stopped rising up into nothing. Mylene shook herself, trying to get rid of the vertigo that lingered. The floor soaked in a green fluid was slippery and soft. Bubbles rose to the surface of the fluid, as if the floor was breathing. No, it was the building, the building was breathing.
Mylene scrambled to her feet, “W-what is this?”
She glanced around, no longer in a grocery store at all. It was like being inside something that was alive, the walls made up of pores that seemed to quiver sickeningly, that green liquid sliding down to the floor from these tiny openings. It was hard for her to pull her mind away from these things and notice that she wasn’t alone.
“Are you okay?”
Was either of them going to be okay? She saw no doors, no windows, nothing except the pulsing cellulose and this juice that left her skin sticky.
When the walls finally stopped shaking and rattling Taijima's brains around in his head, he took a moment to ensure that the ground really had stopped at that there wouldn't be any aftershocks to account for. Blinking a few times to reassert himself, Taijima couldn't help but notice the ground he was staring at didn't look normal anymore.
Continuing his rapid blinking, the teen followed the floor, as if his eyes were being directed on some kind of pathway, until his eyes reached the far wall. Looking around, he realized that it wasn't just the floor that didn't look normal anymore. Nothing did! Everything looked kind of like...kind of like... Well okay, Taijima might not know what it might look like, but he knew it wasn't normal for the inside of a store!
It wasn't until he heard another voice that Taijima realized he wasn't alone. Turning towards the voice, Taijima immediately grinned at the concerned look the girl was giving him.
"Yeah! Just my butt hurts a little from when I fell," he stated, almost as if proud of that fact. As soon as he said that, it was like a light had gone off in his memory and Taijima let out a cry of shock.
“Ah! I hope I didn't squish my food!" he cried, looking down at the packets in his arms.
She couldn’t help but return the smile, for someone to bounce back from a situation like this, Mylene was glad he wasn’t scared. It made it easier for her to control her own worries and fears as she looked around again.
The basket that she had been using to gather her groceries was still here but no hint of the store other than that and the items in the boy’s arms remained.
“I think…we’re alone here.” With no way out.
Mylene sighed heavily, uncertain what to do or if there was even anything they could do. “At least we have some food.” They would get out of here somehow, certainly.
