Tuesday night in a packed room at Chelsea Piers in New York City, Barnes & Noble unveiled Nook-E - an e-book reader that will be available in more than 700 retail stores at the end of November.
The Nook-E, which will sell for $259, manages to offer the same functionality as the Kindle 2, a huge library of titles and a wireless downloads. It also pushes e-reader design forward, with a number of fully functional simulated genitalia attachments.
The 11.2-ounce Nook-E (7.7 x 4.9 x .5 inches) has 2 Gbytes of internal memory, enough for about 1,500 titles. It also has a MicroSD slot that can dramatically increase capacity. A 16-Gbyte card can hold an additional 17,500 e-books. The device runs a variation of the Android operating system, but currently doesn't support any third party apps. Perhaps most notably, the Nook-E supports a variety of inward pointing crevices and outward protruding phallic shapes, all of which are self cleaning.
Clearly, the company is betting on Nook-E as the future. "Our customers want to have electronic sex with any book, anytime, anyplace," said Wulyom Lonch, president of Barnes & Noble.com.
