*marks down titles*

I'm half-way through the latest Sookie book and I'm enjoying it so much I'm going slowly just to savor it.

Hi, I would really value your opinion on the Sookie books. I was wondering about sexual content and violence as I am looking for titles for my school library. Do you think that these books would be ok for 14-16 year olds to read?

Uhm...I don't know if you're asking Bliss or me, but...I really don't know.

It depends...I don't know how American teenagers are, but if they're anything like the Italian ones, they're smart. And they know about sex and they grow up immersed into violence (they see it on TV, on the news on movies, on computer games)...
For those kind of kids the Sookie books are tame. There is some sex here and there (nothing too graphic) and some violence (but nothing too gruesome)...I really don't know.
If it's any help, if I had a daughter/son that age I'd definitely let them read those books, but that's just me... ;-)

I was asking Bliss because she mentioned them but I am happy for an update. I'm in Australia and our kids would be pretty equal with Americans I would say but I am still wary of some of these titles.
Thanks for replying.

good to hear from you. And how busy you've been. I've been reading the poetry of Frank O'Hara and that pretty much sums it up. So yeah.

If you could rec just ONE book, preferably not from a series, if possible, what would you rec?

If you were to ask me, let's just pretend, I'd rec 'the Book Thief' by Marcus Zukas which is actually a young adult book. Your turn.

Ah, poetry. There was a time when I was really into poetry (Withman, Shakespeare, Spoon River, Neruda, Gibran, etc) then it kinda grew out of me...I gues now I'm more for mindless entertainment... *grins*

Oh, gee, this is such an hard question!
From the top of my head I'd say The Stories of Ray Bradbury wich I have read and re-read so many times that I almost know all my favorite stories by heart.
There are many other books I could rec, but if I start I'll never stop. :-)

I just googled it and it seems really good! I'll put in in my "to read" list. :-)

I never had the patience for poetry, now I guess I do. Bradbury was my main read when young, I loved science-fiction, I loved him, I'll check your rec, thanks. I just read his the zen of writing yesterday, his enthusiasm is infectious. If you read it, let me know what you think of the book thief, Zakus's way of writing is beautiful to me.

I am now reading the latest Black Dagger Brotherhood book Lover Avenged, but massively good TV and other distractions have kept me from getting past the first 100 pages - even though so far it is very good. Much, much better than the last one. After this week my TV landscape should be calmer and I might knock it out this weekend.

I also just read mickiebg's book "Horizons" this past weekend and really enjoyed it ( ... )

I'm planning to read it very soon and I'm really happy to hear it's better than the last one! I used to love that series, but the latest few books kinda sucked...I'll still read it, tho... ;-)

I need to try to pick the Sookie Sackhouse books back up. I only made it threw about 3/4 of the first one and then lost interest. But I know so many people on lj and rl who love the series I really should give it another shake.Eh, I never watched the series and your "mental block" is one of the reasons I didn't. I love the books and I have a pretty specific idea about the characters in my mind...I know how they look, how they speak, how they move ( ... )

I had the same issue with Sookie Sackhouse series. I really wanted to get into it, but I just couldn't though I really enjoy series in the similar vein:)

We have a lot of books and authors in common, so I'll recommend a series I know you'll love - Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga. It's space opera, which you might not think is your cup of tea since you read a lot of urban fantasy, but really it is right up your alley. Totally character-driven with lots of humor and romance and stellar prose. Start with "Cordelia's Honor" which is the first two books in one, and available through Amazon.

It's always delightful when you pop up on my Friends posts; wish you'd do it more often!

Are you kidding? I love, love, love love the Vorkosigan saga!! I've read every single book (including the short stories) of the saga and I can honestly say it's one of the best series (sci-fi or not) I've ever read. Miles is my hero. ♥

Awww...you're too kind! I never know what to write about, my life is totally boring and I don't have the skills to "make it funny" as some can do...*sighs*

Right now I am reading A Hummingbird Dance by Garry Ryan and I will soon move on to mickiebg's "Horizons". I've just ordered Psycop by Jordan Castillo Price and I am really looking forward to this one too.
Good to see you.

I liked the sound of it too and, after seeing your list, Ii thought that it would fit in with the books that you are reading now.
I'm really into 'detective' novels right now - can't seem to get enough.
