In Character Information
character name: Theon Greyjoy.
Fandom: George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
Timeline: The end of A Clash of Kings, just before Ramsey Snow arrives with reinforcements, as Theon considers taking the black.
character's age: ~20.
powers, skills, pets and equipment:
powers Theon has no canon powers.
In order to increase his capacity with a bow, and in acknowledgement of the fists he may have to dodge, I would like for the Mist to grant Theon super-speed. In this case the ability to move faster than the human eye can see for short bursts. I'd prefer to play fast and loose with this but I specifically want it for the purposes of dodging non-augmented attacks he is aware are coming, using his bow as a semi-automatic weapon, and getting from place to place really fast.
skills From a "medieval fantasy" world, Theon has a variety of assumed skills, such as chopping wood and lighting a fire. He can read and write. He can ride a horse very well.
A talented bowman, he is able to shoot accurately, quickly, and from a great distance. He enjoys hunting and can also use a sword, knife, or throwing axe.
Even though he spent many years away from the Iron Islands, Theon still knows how to command and sail a longboat, and is fairly at home at sea. As he says: "the sea is in my blood."
Theon has innate deductive skills: he's quite good at looking at a room or person and drawing accurate information from what he notices. (A good example is the night Osha, Bran, Rickon et al flee Winterfell.)
pets Theon's black destrier, Smiler, is coming with.
equipment A tall yew bow and arrows with grey goose fletching. A longsword. A dagger. Black surcoat, golden mantle, over a shirt of well-oiled ringmail over a shirt of boiled leather.

personality:
Theon Greyjoy is a man caught between worlds.
Born the youngest son on the Iron Islands, Theon was most beloved of his mother and slightly spoiled, especially once his two older brothers were killed in battle, leaving him heir to the Greyjoy titles and castles. At the age of ten, he was taken as a hostage by enemies of the Greyjoys, the Starks of Winterfell. There he was raised alongside Ned's other sons: Robb, Bran, baby Rickon, the bastard Jon Snow. But Theon sorely felt his place as prisoner rather than ward, and grew bitter.
Naturally prideful, Theon tends to believe that something is his by rights, an arrogance that is implied has been with him his whole life. But it was only exacerbated by his succession as the heir, and even then his ambition only grows. Robb Stark staking a claim as King in the North has Theon craving his own kingship, and when his father declares himself king of the Iron Islands, and decides to take his crown by force. Theon's realization that his father does not mean for him to be Prince and that his time at Winterfell has caused most of the Ironborn to see him as a weak stranger.
But Theon does have a spine, a determination to quench his ambition by any means possible, a thirst for recognition seated in his deep-seated insecurity. He seems to have a good head for strategy in theory, and deducing information about a person or situation based on certain facts. When things don't go his way Theon grows quickly bitter, but is not humbled: he blames others for his own problems and hates those who he thinks stand in his way. Most of all, Theon hates when he takes pride in his own achievements but they are cut down by others, such as his sister's dismissal of his victory over Winterfell. Anger typically makes him petulant, stubborn and stupid.
When it comes to taking what he wants, Theon swiftly remembers the way of the Iron Isles. There, adornments can only be worn if they were looted from the body of a foe rather than bought with gold, and men steal "Salt Wives" and take thralls to supplement their wives. Indeed, Theon is a great lover of women, and though he isn't typically lead by his urges, he does consider bedding nearly every woman he meets, and has a variety of seduction styles down. Though he isn't actually a rapist he mostly doesn't care much about the feelings of women he wants and will do or say anything to get them to spread their legs. Unfortunately, womanizer though he may be, Theon is especially prone to feeling the sting of humiliation more sorely at the hands of a woman, particularly his sister Asha.
Theon's way with women is in part down to his affable nature: Theon is known for his crooked grin, and he has a tendency to joke and smile, especially in the face of those he considers to be staunchly humorless. Often his jokes can be vicious: he enjoys a few at Jon Snow's expense, mostly because he is offended that a bastard is accorded more honor than him in Winterfell. However his cocky nature, worldly attitude, and boasts of women are also what cause Robb Stark to look up to him as an older brother and an advisor in battle strategy. At least until Theon's betrayal and Robb's death.
Desperation drives Theon to darker and darker acts in an attempt to keep his hold on Winterfell. He is haunted by the ghosts of those he kills, and he feels the hatred of everyone who sees him as a traitor to the Stark generosity, while his family give no recognition of his achievements and believe he will soon lose the castle. Theon grows bitter and lonely.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
The first and obvious answer is because of the influx of GoT characters: I would love to see Theon interacting with the Starks given his betrayal of them. Seeing Ned he will flip his shit ok. Seeing Bran. Robb. Oh, and pretty sure he wants to kill Tonks.
Second is because he has a lot of depth, a lot of possibility to do great or terrible things, and a tendency to be shaped by the people and events around him, which means there's room for Scorched's specific brand of introspection, angst, and large-scale plot to be interesting to play. (Specifically thinking of Broadcast Mind.)
Finally, I think his canon itself meshes well with the scorched world, given they both deal with wilderness and magic and darkness, and the technology isn't too far beyond what Theon is used to, so I don't expect the transition to be too difficult.
Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:
[ It's late at night, or very early morning, and Theon Greyjoy is standing in front of a wide-open window, examining his Forge suspiciously. Close, then distant, then jostled and skewed as he gets the hang of it. ]
Strange voices.
[ And familiar ones. It hadn't taken much toying for the scared dulcet tones of Brandon Stark to filter tinny to his ears. Theon has none of his typical smiles, his lips pursed and slightly petulant, a tired sort of anger in his eyes. ]
This is not the Wall, though it's as cold as Asha's cunt. Neither is it Winterfell.
[ Still the sharp tone, but in truth he's relieved. Theon has had enough of that bastard castle and its ghosts. The most he can hope is that it's specters have not followed him here, wherever here is. ]
Speak, strange voices, and enlighten a man as to his predicament. Are you friends? Or foes?
[ Mostly he expects the latter. ]
Third Person Sample:
Something about the salt in the air is a comfort, though this sea is as sweet and calm as a sleeping babe compared to the violent waves that break against the keeps of the Iron Isles where they huddle against the jagged teeth of the rocks. It makes him consider that perhaps things won't be so bad here.
For yes, the truth is, escaping Winterfell has been a burden lifted from his shoulders. There is a part of him yet that believes he has been lifted from the frying pan and dropped into the cookfire - or worse, the whispering suspicion that this truly is just a waking dream, that in his despair he has gone mad and given himself over to the Stark ghosts that plagued his nightmares. And plague them yet - can a man dream a ghost at night, bloody and near to broken-hearted, and then see him alive and well again during the day?
Theon turns the blade in his hands, staring out at the grey water, listening to it lap against the docks. Brandon Stark. But for the little cripple he would be free of this mess, could bow the knee to Ned Stark and live an unexpected second chance. Perhaps, with a shortage of other lords, he could even be considered for Sansa, whose lashes and hips and waterfall of auburn are a sweet temptation, make his breeches tight with merely a glimpse or a thought.
A second chance. What is dead can never die.
Abruptly furious, he stabs the blade into the creaking wood beside him. Rises again. The word is that death here is tricksy, and Bran has already proven twice that he is not so easy to kill. A dirk across the throat might simply have him wake with more tales to tell, and Theon fears Ned Stark's sense of justice well enough without adding murder as a crime upon it.
No. He must bide his time. Look to other allies. Perhaps he could woo the Targaryen, give her a belly fat with dragon and make her a real mother. After all, his Uncle isn't here to prosthetize, nor his father to look at him with disappointed eyes, or Asha to steal what is rightfully his with a mocking smile upon he lips. Theon is the only Greyjoy here, and he will lurk, like a squid, in the depths of the city, slowly extending his long tentacles, until the time is right to strike.
He leaves the blade meant for Brandon Stark's throat buried in the wood of the dock when he walks away.
Anything else? I may eventually canon-update to ADWD, fair warning.
