Firefox is still significantly better than IE. But at the same time, I'm convinced that Google Chrome in most respects is the best browser out there right now for a pc (I'll still take Safari for a Mac, though that has a few features I don't like).

Seconded. I still have Firefox at home, but I'm using Chrome on my EeePC, which is what I take to school with me.

Do you have a lot of blogs you're following via atom or RSS? That can slow things to a halt, I've found.

Although I've not had near the problems you've had, there are things about FF that bother me now (although it still kills me to use IE at work). FF is still my default at home, but whenever I start to get annoyed, I switch to SlimBrowser. It seems to be a nice, clean blend of what I like best about FF without some of the issues.

I'm using a custom built quadcore DDR3 6 GIG RAM & Windows 7 but not having any problems with Firefox updating on this tower or my dualcore with XP. In the past I did a roll back to a previous Firefox version when there was an obvious problem but when it was fixed, Firefox automatically updated once again. It's possible you may have rolled back so many times you need to uninstall and reinstall Firefox. I had that happen once -- it was enough. Good luck.
