I'll believe that the Harry Reid thing is no big deal as soon as Trent Lott gets his job back.

My view as well.

It's amazing how hypocritical the Dems are being over this, though. Harry Reid's flap is 1,000 times worse than Lott's, and yet Reid gets a free pass, and Lott was crucified. It's not surprising, the hypocrisy, but it's worth noting nonetheless.

I don't think what Reid said was objectionable enough to warrant having to resign, but I do think it's worse than what Lott said. The sole reason for demanding Lott leave the party leadership was of the comments he made - Democrats set the standard in an insane place, they should deal with it.

That's my thought, that the standard has been established, and so now it needs be measured out equally.

oh harry reid fucked up, no question and he should be taken to task. but i got issue with republicans pretending as if they're standing up to reid on behalf of african americans like they've been doing in the media using that sellout michael steele because everytime they get called out on the racist remarks they make, be it lott, or that cd barack the magical negro and every countless example since, they pull the same shit.

In many ways I agree with you. However, my issue is this. When Trent Lott made his comment, the Democratic response established a standard. It said, "When racist remarks are made by public elected officials, especially those in positions of authority (and Lott and Reid being in identical positions, i.e. Senate Majority Leader), this is the standard that informs how we will react. The standard we Democrats are imposing is that the demand must be made that at the very least the person resign from their position of leadership and must do some form of public penance."

So that is the standard. I argue that it is a just standard, and that it represents a fair way of handling a racist remark by a public official. Now it is Reid who made the racist remark. Should not the standard that the Democrats themselves established now be applied equally to Harry Reid? Or does the standard only apply to Republicans for the purposes of political gain?

"The standard we Democrats are imposing is that the demand must be made that at the very least the person resign from their position of leadership and must do some form of public penance."

Yeah but how often have we seen this get done from Republicans or Democrats. If Republicans had been resigning left and right for the numerous racist fuck ups they've made since Lott, I would agree with you wholeheartedly.

But I have a problem with that party passing judgment on the Democrats when the majority of them hold those same sentiments and don't check their own.

Did Reid fuck up? Yes. If he resigns I won't be losing sleep but Republicans crying foul comes across as hypocritical to me.
