It's somewhat ironic that what the Vikings and the English couldn't do, the Church herself is doing in Ireland: stamping out the Catholic faith.

and over here the bishops care more about a wad of cells than the fact that there are people dying for lack of healthcare.

I think this says something really interesting about how people hold religious beliefs: that the threat and use and force can't do it, but that cruelty *within* can stamp it out. The flipside of this is the main reason I've held on to my Episcopalian identity so long - it's not the fundies' threat of hell that keeps me coming back, it's the real goodness I see within the church.
