Kitayama was napping under the sun; he was sprawled on a hammock tied between a shroud and the barricade on the forecastle of the Shooting Star. It was a day without wind so the ship was moving with furled sails, the funnel was letting out a considerable amount of smoke, sign that Tsukada was working hard in the boiler room. Fujigaya had just sent Senga down to help him, he was eager to reach the destination, so he couldn’t be stopped by a no breeze day.
“Kitayama, you’ll burn your skin if you sleep there!”
“Thanks for your concern Fujigaya, I’m just tanning.”
Fujigaya shrugged.
“By the way, how much coal do we have left? Aren’t you rushing a bit too much?”
“We need to be in Smeraltea before the day sets. We can stock up the hold there.”
“It won’t be for free as robbing the Navy’s ships is.”
“Didn’t you hear Nikaido? The Navy will be docked there too. They have business there apparently. I guess they are the same as ours from what I know.”
“I know, I know. Did Nikaido find out which ship are they sending this time?”
“They are sending the Monarch,” Fujigaya said serious. Kitayama blinked. Fujigaya went back to the cabin without even adding a complain about how Kitayama wasn't doing his job right, since he didn't even check this information before. But he knew it wasn't a good idea adding to Kitayama's mood right now.
“Seems like it’s time to meet my old friend.” Kitayama whispered to no one in particular.
--
“Land!!!” Kawai cried from the crow’s nest.
The ship had been already disguised as a merchant’s ship. With the help of some mechanical tricks, the guns could be hidden, and some parts of the galleon could change form slightly to resemble a merchant ship. Then it was just a matter of taking down the pirate flag and not showing the attitude. Usually Fujigaya acted as the captain in this kind of situations. He was very good at tricking the dock officers. Once the paperwork was done, the crew scattered around town, leaving Goseki and Totsuka to guard the ship. Totsuka never really wished to set foot on land. Everyone thought he was a weirdo.
Kitayama made sure to send his best spy, Nikaido, to find out about the Navy business there. And there it was, harbored to the pier. The Monarch. As impressive as he remembered it. Smeraltea was a small port, but very busy since there was a massive coal mine on the island. He was completely confident no one could recognise his ship. The Shooting Star had changed name to Starfish.
Kitayama sent the others to look for information about the place and anything that could be of any use for their search.
The boatswain, Kawai, sent Tsukada to buy supplies. It wasn’t really a good idea stealing from the Monarch as well guarded as it was. Thinking about that, Kitayama realized that something big must have been there, it wasn’t like the Monarch moved for insignificant matters. If the Navy was there then maybe... then maybe a piece of the map was hidden somewhere on the island!
After all the crew had disappeared to carry out their duties, he decided to take a stroll around town. If he was lucky finding information would have been easily done by the time he drank a glass of rum in the tavern. He entered the tavern trying to be as invisible as possible, as less a stranger as possible. The place stank and was full of rough sailors and miners, all of them already drunk. Kitayama knew it was impossible not to stand out. His disguise as a young sailor was effective, but a tad too clean for the tavern.
“Hey! This is no place for ladies!” A man laughed while others started whistling and making noises. Kitayama sat at the counter and ordered a drink. The man decided to ignore him as one of his friends slammed the door open.
“Hey! The Navy closed the mine!”
Lucky, Kitayama thought.
“What?!”
The miners started complaining, because if they took the mine, then that meant no work for no one knew how long.
“Stupid sailors! What do they know?! Do they think without our coal they could move their goddamned ships that fast?!”
“Idiots! It would be like in the old days, they'll have to rely on wind only. And if all days are like today... oh be damned! Them and their stupid ships!”
“Hey! Ships are not stupid! We don’t need your stupid shit to sail,” a sailor shouted; he wasn't famous for being smart.
“Oh yes? Than get the fuck out of the island!”
The quarrel was degenerating, and Kitayama decided to took his leave before getting involved in a fight. Suddenly the door opened and Navy soldiers entered the place, holding their rifles.
“What’s happening here?”
The men stopped arguing and stared at the door when suddenly a Navy official entered. He was someone Kitayama knew well. He tried to hide his face as much as possible. He looked around to see if he could find another exit, but nothing. The tavern was exactly what it looked like: a rathole.
“I’m Inagaki Goro, Captain of the Monarch. I’m looking for a man called Rummer.”
“I’m Rummer” a muscled man covered in dirt shouted.
“Would you please follow us to the mine?”
“Why?”
“It’s an order, no questions admitted!”
Tsk, always the same arrogant way of asking people to do things. Kitayama felt again all his hatred for the Navy rise in his chest.
“I’m not going if you don’t explain me why!”
“People in this place are not really cooperative. It displeases me.” Goro announced to another official behind him. Kusanagi! He was there too! Kitayama was surprised.
“Goro maybe we should explain...”
“We don’t have time! Soldiers. Get him.” The guards moved to seize the man and someone screamed.
“You bastards!!! Get away from this place!” “You steal our coal and come here and close the mine whenever you please!” “We had enough!”
As the crowd started to get worked up, Kitayama decided it was the right time to leave, so he sneaked away from the main door without realizing Kusanagi was looking at him.
“What’s wrong Tsuyoshi?” Goro asked.
“Nothing... just that guy looked familiar.”
Back on the ship, all the pirates exchanged their information. Everyone realized the Navy was looking for something in the mine, but Nikaido couldn’t really find out what it was.
“We need to sneak in their headquarters and find out. They are staying at the island’s Governor’s palace.”
“Nika! Have you not noticed an entire fleet is here? Don’t you think that place would be surrounded by soldiers?” Senga yelled.
“How about the mine?” Fujigaya asked.
“I went there and it’s well guarded. But I’ve heard there’s a secret entrance.” Kawai answered.
“Find out where that is. I’ll find out what they are hiding by sneaking in the palace.”
“You Kitayama?!?" Totsuka shouted.
“I can do it. I’ll go by myself, when it’s dark.”
Fujigaya gave him a worried look. “Okay, we’ll try to sneak inside the mine tonight. Kawai, Nikaido and me. Let’s get ready.”
--
Kitayama had just climbed the wall of the Governor’s palace. He stared at the semi-full moon and then at the silent windows on the facade. All was quiet and after the patrol man passed under him, he threw a rope on the balcony and the hook fastened itself on the marble balustrade. Kitayama tied the other end to a tree not too far from the wall and passed a short rope across the other to glide on it and reach the balcony by sliding. Once there, Kitayama glued to the wall, hoping nobody would notice the rope.
The weather was still hot, so the possibility of opened windows was high. He saw one on the balcony right next to the one he was standing. He walked over the balustrade and on the ledge on the side of the building, reaching the other balcony. He sneaked inside, making sure the lights of the room were off first. It was a bedroom, and judging from the clothes he saw ready on a chair, the Governor’s bedroom. The bulk he could see on the bed was the actual governor, luckily a good sleeper.
He sincerely hoped there was no one guarding the door. He couldn’t hear any noise coming form the corridor so he dared pushing the door open and found out the place was deserted. Or it looked deserted. Kitayama moved as quickly and stealthily as possible.
Where could the operating room be? He didn’t dare to open doors at random, so he thought the well lit room from which he could hear voices could be the one. He put his ear on the door and heard familiar voices inside. Bingo. He was being really lucky that day.
“So they haven’t found it yet?”
“Not yet. I think the miners are hiding something. That Rummer is playing some trick on us.”
“I can see the reasons why they hate us, Kusanagi.”
“But Commodore! We are the Navy! We represent the law and government! They should obey us and help us! We work for their safety!”
“Does it really seem to you we are working for the people’s safety now?”
Kitayama didn’t hear Kusanagi’s answer. When he talked again he had a serious tone.
“By the way. I think I saw an old friend of yours in the tavern today.”
“What?”
“Kitayama is here.”
Kitayama turned around to check if it wasn’t an ambush and they already knew he would have tried to sneak in that palace, but the corridor was still empty. He heard one of the men's footsteps across the room.
“Will you try to catch him again? I have no idea of what a pirate is doing here now that an entire fleet is harboured in Smeraltea. Sounds fishy.”
“Maybe they've already left by now.”
“You know that guy is always up to something. Should we look for them?”
“We don’t have time to waste. Even though I’d really like to find that man, I must follow orders and complete the mission first.”
“It’s weird, I thought catching him was your main purpose. Are you getting old and soft?”
“How dare you! One moment ago you were calling me Commodore and now you talk to me like that.”
“I know you don’t mind that, Nakai. We joined the Navy together after all.” Nakai laughed at Kusanagi’s words. A warm-hearted laugh.
“If you were less inclined towards the bottle you’d be a Commodore too by this time.”
“What’s wrong with having fun sometimes? Besides, it’s not like you don’t drink! The only problem is that I'm a bit noisy when I do it.”
“You get in trouble when you do it. But at least you don’t become a pathetic man mumbling about the past days.”
Kitayama sighed.
“Anyway, it’s time we sleep now. Tomorrow will be a long day.”
Kitayama rushed to hide behind a curtain, glad to whoever decided to decorate the house with such a useful object to hide. Sneaking a peek from his hiding place, he saw the two men walking down the aisle. Nakai’s familiar back made his heart throb. He hadn’t seen the man so close in ages and yet, it looked like yesterday he was practising fencing with him. It felt just like only a moment passed since the day he saw his master’s smile for the last time. A bitter, unforgettable smile.
Kitayama decided it wasn’t time to be sentimental. He opened the door and checked the room to find clues about the Navy’s intentions. Maps were scattered on the table, they looked expensive and accurate. But Kitayama wasn’t there for them. He found a Smeraltea map, smaller, not that accurate, with strange symbols on the surface. Kitayama rolled it and placed it in his pocket. There wasn’t much else that could be considered useful there. He slowly opened the door and looked outside. No one. He started walking, but suddenly a voice shouted to stop. Kitayama started running in the corridor and as soon as he turned the corner he entered the door he came from. He needed to leave quickly because obviously the guard was going to wake up everyone with his screams. As soon as he entered the room though, Kitayama realized his mistake. A candle was lit on a table, and the room definitely wasn’t the one he came in before. From the shadow a figure slowly walked forward. Kitayama looked in disbelief. From all the doors, did he have to chose that one?! In that moment he realized that after all there had to be a limit for all the luck he had that day. Probably some invisible god decided to take it back from him.
“What are you doing here?”
“You tried to catch me for all this time without success so I decided to come here
myself to make it easier for you, old man!”
“Since when you’re so disrespectful? I’m not old.”
“But still, you can’t catch me.”
Nakai drew is sword, pointing it at Kitayama’s chest.
“Wanna bet?”
Kitayama looked puzzled for a second, then drew is own cutlass and crossed blades with the other. They stared at each other, then started fencing. Kitayama tried to get closer to the window while at it, dodging every attack. Did Nakai used to be so slow when fencing? He remembered him fast and lethal.
When someone knocked on the door and shouted there was an intruder in the palace, Kitayama sent Nakai’s sword in the air and pointed his blade at Nakai’s throat.
“What are you waiting for? Do it. Aren’t you a pirate now?”
Kitayama kept on staring into Nakai’s eyes with an aggravated expression. Then he rested the arm holding the sword at his side.
“Being a pirate doesn’t mean I enjoy killing people without a reason.”
“So being enemies is not a reason?”
“There are things like valued enemies. Even if they became rusty with the sword.” Kitayama smiled.
The guard outside yelled “Commodore? Can we come in? Are you alright?”
“I’m fine! Go search the place!” Nakai shouted back, to Kitayama’s surprise. Without indulging any more, Kitayama reached the window.
“Wait!” Nakai exclaimed when he heard the guard’s footsteps moving away from his room’s door. Kitayama turned to look at him, one foot over the balustrade already, his face lit by the moonlight over his head.
“You didn’t kill him did you?”
“Didn’t you know that already?”
“Come back. If you didn’t do anything wrong, just come back. We can fix everything.”
“There’s much more to fix than you believe. And I can’t fix it from there.”
“I guess it’s farewell then.” Nakai said, looking serious.
Kitayama looked at him with a mix of longing and despair then jumped down the balcony and disappeared in the night.
