You and I are both total taphophiles! I enjoyed visiting the graveyard with you during my visit back then...
I agree that whenever I get too down about day-to-day stresses, it helps to think about all the ways in which life is so much better today than it was in the past. Walking through graves and thinking about the dead isn't depressing; it's calming. It puts things into perspective!
We still need to plan to go to New Orleans together and walk around some of those classic French Quarter tombs!
This is one of the reasons I love ding family history. Even the ones who stayed safely at home (in my case that's england) have stories. And when you can look in the census and civil reg and find the places they lived, some times there is still a building there with a date on it that tells you that they lived there. I imagine that the walls talk to me. Along with the graveyards. I wish I could talk to some of them, for just a few minutes, I wish I could know them, really know them. How do you carry, give birth too and bury three children in 2 and a half years with our going mad? and then when your next two live past a month can you possibly even survive when your husband dies. different lives different times. I want to know those women, those familes. Oh, am I carrying on again? sorry. I love it as well.
If you want a narrative; speak with Jean Wesselink's Aunt Fayrene. 90 years old last weekend....birthday party had to be postponed because Aunt Mit died at 105. There are girls around who can still tell you the tales...maybe not theirs but they know their Mothers stories. Hurry! About a 2 hours ride...take your camera.
