I have always taken a much more practical approach to spell work. Like laughinggoddess I think that spells need to be personal, they can be personal in the sense that you use ingredients that relate to the purpose in your opinion or they can be personal because you adjust your thinking to relate the ingredients to the purpose
( ... )
The above are all good suggestions, and I would like to add a little theory if I may. In my experience, personalization is key but the real success of a spell hinges on 4 things (could be more than three, but remember this is just my experience)
1: Focus of intent: you really have to know what you want to do and know how you would like it to happen.
2: Focus for manifestation: This is where the energy you raise will go or be directed i.e. a talisman you wish to charge, a person you wish to heal, a place to protect etc.
3: Resonance of symbolism: If those rowan twigs really connect with an specific meaning to you, then they will work. This has been touched on by http:laughinggoddess. If you are working in a group, you should make sure that all the folks in the group can agree on the symbolic meanings of the words, physical items etc. used for the spell.
4: Efficient raising and directing of energy: If you don't raise and direct the energy well, there is nothing to set the figurative wheels of the spell in motion.
This could be a long discussion but I have learned two things that ring true;
1) I can write a spell that will work for me and I can write a spell that will work for you. But if I write a spell that will work for her, it probably won't work for you.
Think of spells as specific methods for inducing self hypnosis. If you don't like one that you read, read another, or write your own. Personally, I like the sigil stuff from chaos magick quite a lot and have used many of those ideas in my own spells. Mostly I write my own or just do what feels appropriate, though occasionally I get interesting ideas or tricks from other people.

2) The spell was done before you ever started.
