We're moving! Hooray! The completion date was set for yesterday, we met the seller and he was happy with everything, the solicitors got everything sorted out for Friday

Yeah, this is so similar to what happened to us, it's not funny. In our case, the owner's bank lost the title deed. We had to change leave dates, re-book moving vans, cancel and re-make connections and disconnections and beg our real estate to let us stay another week. We have had people inspect our current place, so we are REALLY lucky that they didn't snap it up. Where would we have gone? Where would our stuff have gone? Thankfully, it's all sorted now (as evidenced on Facebook). But, yeah, majorly stressful and scary and upsetting. Fingers crossed your problem gets sorted out quickly.
It's too late for that, but we will be arguing recompense for any cost incurred - mortgage interest, rent here, etc. It's also technically not their choice to make, it's the seller... and since it's not his fuck up, it's not really us arguing with him. He's actually doing everything he can to get this sorted, and we've been told "Maybe Friday" now. It's possible, and our solicitors (now they have more information) can't see a reason that we can't move in... just got to cross our fingers!
The seller actually said if he still had a spare key (the neighbour gave the last one to him last week), he'd have let us have it "But don't tell the lawyers!" But it's not up to him, it's all in the hands of legal types now.
There's all sorts of money-laundering rules and regulations, and the fact that it's not the owner who's selling it - she has dementia, and is in a home, so her son is selling it for her. Lots of paperwork to make sure he's not selling the house against her wishes, or keeping the cash or whatever. And this paperwork should have been done in March.
