Tomato Harvest

Oct 22, 2015 13:31

Thirty-six quarts canned and put away. This morning's harvest was only 1/3 of the previous harvest. I wonder if this picking corresponds to a heat wave months ago. When it's really hot the tomato flowers don't set fruit.

No worries, as there are still lots of green tomatoes and probably 6 weeks before first frost.

I'd think so. Temps over 80F pretty much Stun anything I grow except Eggplants(unless they're Japanese, then they do as well).

With Roma tomatoes, it's far above 80F, but when it gets blistering and scorching hot the plant stops setting fruit. The green tomatoes still there must have set after. These are supposed to be determinate tomatoes, but I've never seen them ripen in that way. I always need to pick every four days or so, for months, all the way up to first frost.

I've usually grown Indeterminant Tomatoes but IF I grow any next yr I'm going to try only determinant; see if that gives me a decent Harvest before Heat Stuns them. In my climate I'd long given up hope of having a season-long harvest.

In the Philippines, I've seen shading of tomatoes and such. Maybe some trick like that could extend the growing season for you in Florida.
