I don't have the brain power to take on the first question, since I don't think paganism is influencing the mainstream media in any significant way (minus the occasional piece of fluff fun like Charmed or The Craft).

The first reference I encountered in general culture? A store at my farmer's market that specialized in candles and incense that I frequented as young as 16, I realized some years later, doubled as a witchy supply house: cauldrons, oils, sage, etc. This was confirmed when he opened up a second shop that dealt with witchy things not scent-related: books, Tarot decks, altar cloths, etc. Also, the magic and mythology in Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon-it seems very much how Wiccan "types" (ie, Wiccans and those who follow a Wicca-inspired path) do their thing, more or less. Though it has been about ten years since I've read the book, so I could be mistaken.
