I spent the better part of today with David, and people I haven't seen in years, all back for him and his sister, to tell funny stories and remember, and to help the family. It's been a strange day.

You want to go back a few hours and tell the guy to wear a seatbelt, or maybe just to watch him with the dog in the afternoon.

And so it goes.

Writing is the strangest act. You wait weeks, months--agonizing over sentences and sounds and patterns and ideas. And then suddenly it emerges as if the work simply existed without any need to put it down ( Read more... )

Today was the first useless day of summer. I'm sure there will be plenty to come. I guess it's nice to do absolutely nothing--but I'm so used to being busy and surrounded by people that it's a bit uncomfortable.
