Hello all I am stealing this prospective itinerary for consideration
for Kili 40, 2015
Far enough away to start saving for this pilgrimage

I have been planning to go up Kili for a while. This is a tentative
date. Hopefully by Jan 2015 if everything goes right we can start
booking our plane tickets.

My plan it to fly into Nairobi. Do some sightseeing around Nairobi.
Then take a bus to Tanzania a day or two later. I will try to limit
the use of porters as much as I can. You are not allowed to go up
without a guide and porters, so I will try to find a reputable agency
that doesn't overcharge for this stuff and exploit their poor workers.
If anyone has an suggestions for agencies, let me know.

The guide and
porters might run us a few hundred bucks each. Again as the date
approaches, I will have a better idea of all the costs. I also would
like to perhaps do some other sightseeing while we are down there. I
would love to maybe camp out in the Serengeti for a few days and chill
out in Lake Victoria.

Therefore this trip will take approximately 2 weeks. but you could
come for the safari and skip climbing Kili, but to summit Kili is a
life goal and I want to do it for 40.

(10,000ft) (day 1 on the mountain)
Drive for hour and half from the Arumeru River Lodge to Machame gate
trail head for registration, and meet the rest of the crew (Cooks and
Porters) ready for the climb. We will start the climb through
rainforest and the giant heathers for 4 to 5 hours with a lunch stop
halfway to our first overnight at Machame camp.( 5,950ft)

Day 8:  Shira Camp

(12,480ft) (day 2 on the mountain)
Short day but rather steep rocky and dusty trails. It's a slow hike
with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Most of the
route is rather bare of vegetation providing little shade from heat.
You will cross many ridges and see the first of many Senecias.

Day 9: Barranco Camp

(13,000ft) (day 3 on the mountain)
Start with climbing over boulders and very few rocks, then steady
uphill climb to Lava tower and stop for lunch around noon. For those
interested we may climb up the Lava tower which is 14850ft (You may
start to get a mild headache due to altitude change). From Lava tower
we will go down for about 2 hours through dusty and rocky trails to
the Barranco Camp at 13000ft. We do that for acclimatization.

Day 10:
Karanga Valley Camp

(13,450ft) (day 4 on the mountain)
Start scrambling up the Barranco wall for an hour and half which is
steep and you will be using your hands to reach and steady yourself
like rock climbing, although it's not as challenging as rock climbing.
At the top of the wall you can see the Barranco valley and the
campsite you spent a night before. You will walk up and down the
greener valley which is the last water point to the mountain.

Day 11: Barafu Hut Camp

(15000 ft) (day 5 on the mountain)
Short but steep uphill climb across barren landscape with lots of
boulders and shattered rocks. You will see the Decked glaciers on your
left. Keep going a very steep ridge until we reach a rocky section for
more scrambling for about hour and half. Our next camp will be on
large rocks with very steep cliff faces. We will go to bed very early
because we will have to wake up at 11 Am for the summit.

Day 12: (Day 6 on the mountain)

We will start our ascent by head lamps at about 12 midnight so that we
can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose
volcanic scree has some well- graded zigzags and a slow but steady
pace will take us to Stella Point in about five to six hours. We will
rest there for a short time with a hot cup of tea while enjoy the
sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the
two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak
(19,340 ft) 5,895m. Passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice
cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We will start our
descent which is steep and rigorous via Stella Point to Barrafu hut
Camp. We will stop at Barafu Camp for lunch and a good rest before we
proceed down to Mweka Hut, (10,170ft) 3760m very comfortable hike, but
long.

Day 13: (Day 7 on the mountain)
This festive day will include Kili songs, a hike down through the rain
forest to Mweka Gate (4,500ft)Today's hike will take us about 3 to
4hours for a picnic lunch, presentation of certificates and photos.
After lunch we will transport you to your hotel, in downtown Arusha
where you will spend the night.
/> Day 14: This morning, you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel and spend
the afternoon in downtown Arusha, where you can shop and enjoy the
local scene until being transferred to the airport for your departure
home.
