Long before Zexion existed, there was Ienzo (イエンツォ), a young boy who was put under the care of Ansem the Wise after his parents died. Ienzo became the youngest of six apprentices to work under Ansem on studies of the Heart, following in his father's footsteps. During their research on the Heart, it was Ienzo who suggested the creation of an underground lab for their research. When Ienzo's heart was taken by the Heartless he became a Nobody and renamed himself Zexion (ゼクシオン), also known as the "Cloaked Schemer" (影歩む策士 "Shadow-walking Schemer") and Number VI of the Organization.
Zexion uses his power of illusion to mimic others' weapons, disguise himself as others, and create duplicates of himself. He uses a lexicon, "Book of Retribution" (裁きの書), as his weapon. He is able to trap his enemies within his lexicon's pages and attack them in an illusionary dimension of his own making. He can also substitute his lexicon for himself to avoid attacks, and control the lexicon by making it float and cut people with its sharp pages.
In Castle Oblivion, Zexion planned to use Riku against Marluxia and his co-conspirators who wanted to overthrow the Organization. After Sora defeated the Riku Replica and Marluxia, however, Zexion saw Riku to be of no use and attempted to destroy him. Using the card Axel created from Sora's memories, Zexion drew Riku into a simulation of Destiny Islands where he tormented Riku with his guilt over the islands being destroyed. He then assumed the guise of Sora and attacked Riku, telling him that he's become a pawn for the darkness. He engulfed Riku in light, but Naminé (disguised as Kairi) intervened to convince Riku to accept both darkness and light. With newfound confidence, Riku overpowered Zexion, causing him to retreat.
Afterward, Axel brought the Riku Replica to Zexion, convincing the replica that he can become "real" by gaining power that the real Riku does not have. The replica agreed and killed Zexion to take his power as his own. Zexion, already weakened by Riku's attacks, is drained of life and disappears into Nothingness.
