Dino collapsed on Ruki’s silk sheets, still damp from the shower. Ruki joined him, his eyelids heavy. He traced his fingers across Dino’s shoulders, the constellation of freckles below the blades, down his mid back. He wanted to etch every curve of his body in to his memory. As Ruki was ready to welcome the warm embrace of sleep, Dino rolled over to face him, propping himself up on his elbow.
“How did you get into music?” He asked him, tenderly tucking a loose strand of hair out of Ruki’s eyes. Ruki leaned into his touch, that action feeling the most intimate thing they’d done all night.
They talked for what felt like hours, about music, about their lives. Ruki learnt Dino had been taking ballet classes since he was three. Ruki talked about his vague memories of Tokyo. They talked about Korean food, Camden Market, their band mates, worst stage outfits.
“Would I know any of your music?” Dino asked.
Ruki grinned. “Probably not, I’m not on Tiktok.” He gave Dino a sideways glance; he looked more youthful with his fresh face. Cute. Intrigued. Enough to destroy Ruki’s guard.
“I could sing you something I’m working on?” Dino made space for Ruki. Watching him intently, he opened his palms towards Ruki, go ahead.
He began, the song he’d been writing was titled, Calm Envy. He suddenly felt vulnerable, he wasn’t conscious about his voice. He knew he was a talented singer. But here he was about to bare his soul. This felt more exposing. More exposing than the fact that he was still undressed.
Even though you’re beside me, You still seem so distant.
His eyes met Dino’s, imagine your audience naked, they say. He didn’t have to, he felt a tell-tale blush scatter his cheeks.
I want to see all of you, I want love all of you.
Your answer is a smile I lose myself in.
You don’t love the everyday, we’ve lost.
You’ve held on for so long, she’ll never fade away.
It was one of the most deeply personal songs Ruki had written. A story that had been too raw for him to tell. Old wounds heal. They leave a scar if you’re not careful. He didn’t want to think about it too much right now.
He looked down, un-characteristically shy.
“Woah.” Dino whistled. “Your voice man, it’s beautiful. The song - is it about an ex?” Ruki shrugged, nonchalant.
“Kinda. Very long time ago, you’d have literally still been a baby.” He grinned. He cast his eyes towards the bedroom window, sky turning pink with the glimmer of sunrise.
“We should really get some sleep. Big fucking day tomorrow.”
“Big fucking day.” Dino repeated.
He pulled Ruki close as he slid next to him. “I’m big spoon.”

The warm glow of midmorning sun engulfed Uruha as it streaked through his window. Jae had already left, not before waking Uruha briefly with a soft kiss on the forehead, Jae’s morning stubble grazing his skin.
Jae, Uruha daydreamed, was the most handsome man he’d ever seen. Well built, muscular, but not too much. A little short, maybe 5”7. But that didn’t matter. Strong gaze. His shaven head and designer clothes reminded Uruha of Pitbull. So much so, he had simply saved Jae in his contacts as “JaeBull”. He’d already texted. A simple, grammatically incorrect:
“Hello beauty. have nice day” Followed by a smiley emoji, heart emoji, kissy face emoji.
Uruha held the phone close to his chest, like he was cradling a baby bird.
Beauty. It’d been a while since Uruha had felt beautiful. Aoi had always been the talented one. Uruha had the face, the one with the best legs for hot pants. The one to purse his over-lined lips and offer Ruki a chaste kiss on the cheek - an eruption of screams from the fans for his efforts. Although, the thing about being the pretty one, it leaves you pretty hollow once ‘pretty’ fades.
As he dressed, he scrutinized his body in the standing mirror. He touched his shoulders, turning left and right. They were too broad. Too masculine.
He’d walked home with Jae that night. Neon city lights making it feel they were rushing through galaxies. Held hands swinging careless, breezy, tipsy. Two men passed them on the dimly lit street. He saw the double-take. First the intrigue of this bionic woman towering over her lover. Then the realisation, the disgust.
“Fucking faggots.” One of them muttered as they passed Uruha and Jae.
Uruha’s first instinct - clenched fist, clenched jaw. “You got something you want to fucking say?”
It’s not like he wanted to be a girl - but he didn’t know where he belonged. His persona to be feminine, his desire to be pretty, porcelain. But his first instinct was always to fight, spit, snort. Nothing decorous about being on your knees in a public toilet.
What was it the kids called it these days? Gender fluid? Maybe that. He pulled a small bag of white powder out of his bedside table. Pushed his hair out of his face as he snorted. The rush making him shake off the thoughts.
Maybe him and Jae would move to LA. He’d give up his coke habit, and Jae would go on to manage Beyonce.
Maybe he would stay at home, so Jae would come home to fresh quinoa salads and Chardonnay.
Maybe him and Bee would take their children for walks along the beach. His own set of adopted, cherub-cheeked twins in their stroller.
Yeah right, Uruha thought, hastily pressing “delete” on Jae’s number.

For a second day in a row, Ruki felt the wrath of the lack of REM sleep. Dino shook him awake; his twenty-four years on this planet ensuring that he could take night of whisky and fucking until daylight in his stride.
“I’m going to make coffee, do you want one?” Dino said gently in his ear, kissing his lobe. Ruki grunted in response, what was with the men in his life and early mornings lately?
He was in uncharted territory, a stranger rustling round in his kitchen. Entering his space. His home under siege. Whilst out of Dino’s eye-line, Ruki checked his reflection. He tidied his hair. Dino looked fresh as a fucking daisy. Confidently strutting in his underwear like he was home.
“I was thinking,” Dino began, he stood in front of Ruki, who’s eyes were drawn to said underwear.
Ruki murmured in response, pulling Dino to join him on the bed. Was morning sex on the table? Ruki hoped, but oh shit, what about morning breath? He was fuckin’ tired man, would even be able to perform? He felt a stir, blood beginning to flow. Yes, no problem. The show must go on.
“That song,” Dino continued. “I can’t get it out of my head. It’s incredible. Please let me post it.”
“Oh.” Ruki responded, caught off-guard. Slightly embarrassed by the semi he was sporting. “Yeah sure.”
Dino pulled on his clothes, glancing down at Ruki. “And then I’ll take care of that."

Dino directed Ruki. Sit here, you look hot in this light. Just need a tiny bit of lip gloss. Roll up your sleeves just a little. This guitar looks vintage. You have great skin, by the way.
“Post cum glow.” Ruki smirked, coy. Priorities.
Dino winked at him, clicking ‘record’.
Demeanour changing. “What’s up, my Carats” He hollered, using the name for the group’s fan base. “I am here with my friend, Ruki Matsumoto who going to perform, the GazettE’s upcoming song, Calm Envy.” Ruki exhaled deeply, before strumming the first chord on his guitar.
