Changmin's never been good at dancing. He's awkward with his arms and he doesn't know which way to step and whenever he tries, he always ends up with his palms scratched and knees bruised. 'Hopeless', he calls himself, and after half an hour of trying to learn the new routine, he turns his back to the mirror that stretches across the room so he doesn't have to look at himself.
He sits on the ground with his legs crossed and closes his eyes, wiping away the sweat that runs down the sides of his face. He thinks about the latest song they've been working on, and he finds his fingers tapping against his legs as if he were playing the drums. He hums quietly under his breath and thinks about the harmonies he sings that match with the melody, feeling his heartbeat slow to the beat of the song like a metronome, a quiet drum pounding softly against his chest.
The door suddenly bursts open and Changmin is shaken out of his trance. Yunho stands at the door, dressed in a white t-shirt and dark jeans with his favourite bowler hat resting snugly on his head.
"You practicing?" he asks, and makes his way towards the younger man.
"Taking a break," Changmin smiles wearily.
Yunho sits down beside him and takes off his hat before digging his head into the crook of Changmin's neck. "I'm tired," he says with a sigh. His breath is warm against the younger man's skin and Changmin feels his heart skip a beat. He wonders if Yunho noticed.
"Yeah... Me too," he says after a brief pause.
"Have you gotten the routine down yet?" Yunho's eyes close, tracing slow circles on Changmin's thighs.
Changmin frowns, "Not quite."
"Want to practice together? It might help."
"Don't feel like it right now," Changmin groans. "And who was it that said they were tired?"
"I am, but..." he shrugs. "I like seeing you dance."
Changmin growls, "You mean you like seeing me mess up?"
"No!" Yunho laughs. "I really do like seeing you dance."
The younger man scoffs. "You and I both know that I don't dance well."
"Who said? You're actually not as bad as you think. And for the record, I would still like watching you even if you danced like a monkey," he smiles. "Besides, it's cute seeing you try so hard."
"Oh, now I'm cute?"
"You were always cute," Yunho laughs. "Or at least, until Junsu stole it."
"Right," Changmin says sarcastically, rolling his eyes.
"Let's dance together," the older man suggests again.
"No."
"Come on, Changmin." He stands up and reaches out his arm. "Come on!"
"No! Hyung, I don't feel like it."
"Get up, Changmin. If you dance with me, I'll take you out for snacks later. My treat?"
Changmin groans and rolls his eyes. "Fine, but you better not ditch me for some other guy friend again."
"Hey, that was only one time and I hadn't seen the guy in like, ten years!"
"Yeah, yeah. What a lousy excuse."
"Okay! I promise I won't leave you. Now, get up and quit whining!"
When Changmin scrambles to his feet, Yunho already has the track booming. Changmin slides into formation and shifts his legs front and back, arms reaching upwards, then swooping down again. He isn't as graceful as he'd liked to be. He knows about his half-second slip-ups and tense postures. But, maybe having Yunho dancing in sync with him makes him feel a bit better. It's a kind of comfort, in a way, having Yunho by his side. It's always a comfort.
He remembers the first time they've practiced together, just like now, the two of them alone in the practice room. It was eight years ago, a month and two weeks after they've met. The clock was ticking past midnight and Yunho wasn't much different from now-- ambitious, competitive, strong-willed, yet so kind and gentle and thoughtful. He wanted this life so badly and would stay up till the crack of day to perfect a routine. Changmin wasn't the same. He didn't want it as badly as Yunho did. But after seeing him strive for his passion, Changmin made it his goal to go after a dream too. A few months later, Changmin learned to chase the dream Yunho strived for, and they both are still climbing up the ladder of success together.
A few seconds before the routine ends, Yunho changes the song. The stereo hums a slow ballad and Yunho quickly grabs Changmin by the wrist so that he doesn't have the chance to run away without another dance.
"Wait-- I want to dance to this!" Yunho says, gripping tightly, unwilling to let go. "Dance with me!"
"Dance by yourself, hyung, I'm tired!"
"Just one more, Changmin-ah, please?"
"No!"
"Changmin-ah!"
Changmin looks into Yunho's chocolate brown eyes and he feels his stomach tying into a knot. The older man forms a pout and whispers a quiet "Please?" and after a few seconds of looking at the desperate man, Changmin relents.
"Just one."
That was all that Yunho needed to hear. He wraps his arms around Changmin's waist and pulls them together, the beat of the slow rock feels heavy against their bodies. Yunho places his forehead gently on Changmin's, and they move in matching rhythm. Their lips brush like a feather's touch, and Changmin craves more, lured in by the sweet musk of Yunho. Their tongues tangle into each other's and the kiss feels like a smoldering fire. Changmin tightens his grip on Yunho's shoulder and kisses deeper, but he breaks it off before his heart pounds right out of his chest. They look into each other's eyes, and Changmin feels like he could live in this moment forever. Yunho begins a small trail of kisses across Changmin's jawline and works his way down to the neck, each kiss leaving a small burn and permanent mark on his soul.
The song ends before Changmin wants it to. Yunho walks to the stereo to shut it off and Changmin seats himself onto the floor. He lies flat on his stomach, forehead pressed against the cool wooden panels. He closes his eyes and feels his heart begin to slow in his chest and breathes. He hears Yunho's footsteps and reaches out his arms in a welcoming gesture. Yunho rests his body in his and wraps his arms around the man in a lazy hug, and Changmin fits himself comfortably into the curve of Yunho's body like his perfect puzzle piece.
"Hey," Yunho whispers quietly. "Changmin-ah."
"Yeah?"
Yunho hesitates and rests his lips against Changmin's forehead. "I love you," he says, and it sends butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
Changmin opens his eyes and he feels Yunho's warm smile melting his heart. Changmin reaches out his hand and entangles it with Yunho's and quietly whispers, "I love you, too."
Because it doesn't matter if forever ended. Changmin would still love Yunho regardless.
