Silent Voices

Your arm jerks up, a gasp slips from your lips. You nearly fell asleep. The clock reads twelve minutes past two in the morning. My cold fingers trace your wrist, your new tattoo still seeping through your pale skin, getting used to resting on your sharp bones.
You don't say anything, but turn to me, your sleepy chocolate eyes blinking secrets and curiosity.
I close my eyes momentarily, feeling your warm gentle breath as it lingers on my chin. I feel a smile against my lips, a soft smile that smells like love and vanilla chapstick. My eyes crack open slightly. A blurry vision of your closed eyes shaped like crescent moons, your lashes like an angel resting peacefully, his wings hanging off the edges.
I cherish these moments the most, I think. The silent conversations and careful kisses you place. They contrast with the others-- the crash as our bodies collapse onto the bed like dark vicious waves rolling up onto rocky shores, the bruises we find the morning after, blue and purple pools melting on our hips and shoulders.
Our silence isn't like the rest. I can hear your voice as you look into my eyes. I've always said that your eyes speak to me. I wonder if I do the same for you.
Hello, hello, can you hear me? I would ask in my head, a floating question and I'm not sure if I'll ever know the answer.
I'm nothing without you.
