The movie was, indeed, crap. The book was slightly better (and may as well have had completely different characters, considering how different they were from the ones in the movie). But Dan Brown's strong point isn't, and has never been, good character development - he's a research nut IMHO, and that's why his books are worth reading.

In any case, sucks that you were alone on Easter.
