A butterfly crosses in front of him, rises, falls; beats the wind as it touches the sun. Donghae blinks. Two starbursts explode behind his eyelids, and the heat of the sun beats into his skin.
He tastes sulfur and seawater on the cool air floating past him. Sand dunes pile at his feet, spreading for yards in blank patterns; catching his interests when he looks away from the sun. Flecks of gold still dance in his vision - and soon the butterfly is long since captured in the morning light.
“Sea, sea, sea.” He says, and decides he should feel more at home here than anywhere else. But the sun burns bright as foamy waves crash against the shore and butterflies escape into paths of light, while he waits for someone to come and find him - and he wonders how long before he can leave.
Overhead, a cluster of birds soar and shout him a carefree cry. He raises a hand to them - keeps his eyes from the sun this time - the patterns in his vision still fading, and tests a laugh.
No one comes.
Waves crash against the shore and roar in his ears. He lets his eyelids fall shut, and the rush of sound grows, breathing images into his mind. Childhood smiles, his family laughing with him at the table, an encouraging remark from a voice he can still recall.
White and red and black - car accidents and funerals, Kyuhyun with too many tubes twisting around him, a coffin (his father, his father), Heechul’s leg full of metal, Eeteuk and stitches (one-hundred and seventy threads embedded in soft skin).
dreams, dreams, reality, nightmares.
“Hey…” And suddenly Kibum’s there, as Donghae coughs, chokes, tastes tears he didn’t notice were falling. Kibum crouches next to him (worried, Donghae knows, and fights for words to reassure him). Sobs bubble up in his throat; Kibum falls as he falls, and the sand bites into their backs.
They’re both coated in sand and salt and shivering from the cold. Kibum’s arm wraps around him as the last tendrils of sunshine are streaking their way across the sky, over the crashing water. Donghae finds his voice.
“Someday, everything flies into the sun.”
Kibum doesn’t ask - doesn’t need to (maybe, Donghae thinks, maybe maybe he understands) and his arm around Donghae’s shoulder is warm. Salty water dries down Donghae’s legs and against his cheeks, and he points, suddenly.
They watch the caterpillar make its way across the piece of driftwood, as the sun’s glow slips beneath the horizon.
