“Hey,” he had said, that first night, when Yunho sat across from him with hay biting into his knees and a frayed red backpack in his hands. “Good luck.”

And Yunho hadn’t thought anything of it, just pushed his hair back and hoped they weren’t all stealers and beggars. He’d heard the stories - knew the rumors following these wagons, these new-age gypsies. He shook his head. It was crazy to be here.

It hadn’t mattered two hours earlier when he’d been on the side of the road with no hope and two quarters. The cars had come up fast, all old trucks and one corvette; the third truck had pulled up beside him. “Yo, you,” the guy in the back had said - a scrawny thing, bigger eyes than his face could carry - “going somewhere?”

And Yunho had said no. No, he wasn’t going anywhere, but the guy had laughed like he’d told them all the best kind of joke. “Well,” he’d declared. “You’re going somewhere now.”

They introduce themselves by coincidence, not custom. He learns the scrawny boy with the big eyes is Heechul - he’s getting yelled at by another, Donghae, who shares smiles for free. Yunho doesn’t know the name of the boy who wished him good luck. He just knows his straw blond hair and the wistful, empty eyes.

They continue on near-empty highways for days, until Yunho’s forgotten the past and the future and can only remember endless roads. He’s stuck in the back of the third truck, with Heechul yelling conversation into his ear over the wind, until the driver - Yoochun - turns up the radio and tells him to shut up.

They never seem to be going anywhere but they never stop.

He doesn’t think to count how many of them there are until it’s been a week and he’s starting to wonder what they’re doing and he can barely remember his name. There’s ten - he counts them when they’re camped around a sign post and talking low in a language he doesn’t know.

The scene blurs. There’s a hand on his shoulder and Yunho turns to see blond hair and a tight smile, and then a water bottle is shoved into his hands. “Drink,” the guy says. “It won’t last too long.”

“Uh.” Yunho says. The other is sliding into the corvette and the rest of the group heads back to the trucks and Heechul yanks at his arm. They leave. Drive down a road with no name for hours.

It’s when they get to a town that he recalls the rumors and the whispers and some girl who he can’t really picture anymore saying, ‘there’s this group, see, and they’re devils. stealing, horrid devils.’ Yoochun is hoisting a rifle onto his shoulder with casual ease, and Heechul’s staring at the town, eyes narrowed - excited - he exclaims, “Easy time, tonight.”

There’s a short, barking laugh. The second truck - Siwon’s, Geng’s - is opened and they’re all pulling weapons out of the back. Donghae looks back at him with a smile on his face and a knife in his hand.

Yunho stops. He doesn’t know what he’s doing, but then there’s cold, biting metal in his hands and a blank stare from the blond boy.

“Let’s go,” someone calls.

They pilfer and they rob and the weapons are more than just show. Yunho should feel something other than numb but he can barely even remember his name. And somehow it’s a relief, this - something other than traveling endless road.

It’s a little like being alive.

And the boy says it when they get back to camp, when they’re stocking that corvette with dolls and heirlooms and photographs. “It’s a little like living,” and they both watch Donghae pause, put a hand over a worn baby doll, frown. “It’s a little like having memories.”

When they set off down a barren highway again, Yunho sits and listens to Heechul weave stories about nothing - and thinks back, back, back.

He doesn’t remember who he is.
