But it must be said again that all us boys are just screaming
Into microphones for attention
Because we're just so bored
fall out boy, get busy living or get busy dying

Jaejoong is sprawled across a bed - unmade, not his - with his face too pale and his hands a little shaky. He hasn’t eaten in a while, “not hungry” and more than a little devastated. Changmin takes up fort across from him and wraps his arms around a pillow. He stares.

This is silly, he thinks. He says, “Yunho cares too much. He’s just showing it wrong.”

“Psychology has always been your forte,” Jaejoong notes, blank tone and blanker eyes.

A pause. “But I’m not the one in love.”

(if we take a look inside changmin’s head right now we’d see phrases of static and frustration and love. a slow-motion heart-broken scene of hands brushing against his. brown eyes in the mirror. “but, changmin, you’re so-“ harsh, off-key laughter. the way his forehead grew heavy with wrinkles after changmin kissed him. told him he was joking. more laughter. distinct. the kind that sticks in his mind when the stop button breaks.)

Yoochun comes home drunk one night with buttons missing on his shirt. He drops the shirt next to the wash pile and leaves it, hopes no one will notice. Jaejoong’s already in bed but he’s not asleep - Yoochun counts the careful but-not-quite even sound of his breathing and lets him be.

Hands to his forehead; the oncoming headache sent down its roots. Management’s got his solemn oath to stop this “reckless, irresponsible behavior.” They label him a nuisance, but he categorizes the words as an urge to stick to a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell philosophy.

If there’s nothing for them to do, they’ll do it anyways. They’re too used to having no time to breathe, by now they’ve cut their break cables and they can’t stop even with a foot pressing hard and persistent against the break. Yunho’s drilling them on a dance routine that everyone remembers, but no one seems to get right.

Jaejoong’s always a second too late, Yoochun’s moving with liquid-fluid inconsistencies. Changmin’s stiff. He’s got that look on his face that Yunho knows means he understands, remembers, and has cataloged the routine in that neat mind of his, but he can’t keep his limbs from rebelling. Junsu looks good.

But the mirror across the way is worse than a video camera, and its full-frame reflection is unforgiving. They can see every mistake, every wrong step, every time Yunho’s eyes flash anger or Junsu’s flash frustration or Jaejoong’s give up.

Keep in there, someone would have said, if only it had been a few (years) hours earlier and they’d been a little less tired. Keep in there.

A few notices:
Lost: A heart. If found, please return to Changmin as soon as possible. He misses it.

Found: A voice. Junsu would like to know who to thank.

Lost: A family. Yoochun would like his to be returned. No prior notice needed.

Found: Parents. Jaejoong may have two too many; he’d like this to be kept quiet.

Lost: Anonymity. Please donate any extra hats to Yunho.

If Junsu sings a stanza one more time, his voice is going to break. He breathes in. The music trembles to a stop and the silence slides in, full-blown and beautifully still. Junsu stands in the middle of the room, dares himself.

One minute. He takes tiny breaths and lets the quiet wash over him.

Two minutes. It’s a little suffocating.

Three minutes.

Three minutes and fifty-three seconds. Junsu heads for the door and pulls out his cell phone, hits the first number on speed dial and hopes Junho will pick up.

In the end nothing is ever really resolved; it’s one of those days when they have a little extra time and they’re sick of the take-out and Jaejoong’s getting antsy so he cooks with the ingredients he can scavenge.

“Thanks.” Yunho says, and it’s so loaded Yoochun nearly chokes up with laughter. “Yes,” he adds on, “thanks so much, Jaejoong baby, what would we ever do without you?”

“Starve.” Jaejoong snarls, and hides the resulting grin behind his hand.

Yoochun opens his mouth again and then yelps - sending a glare at Junsu who’s smiling angelically from across the table. Junsu kicks like a soccer player.

“Hey,” Changmin says. Realization just dawned on him. “It’s been five years since we all met.”

“Huh.” Junsu and Yoochun say. “Oh?” Jaejoong adds.

“Yeah.” A grin. He lifts up a loaded spoon. “To us.”
