Well, the big problem with this type of unprofessional* psychology is that they tend to transfer the dependence and self-worth of the individual into the group, and then fail to wean the individual of their dependence. After all, it's not good for their bottom line to actually cure people; just to make them seem cured. [Not that this is necessarily the case in this example, it's just common practice in these sorts of endeavours.] It's one of the big flaws in Freudian-based psychoanalysis, and which is why so many (professional) psychologists that make use of it (or the later schools of psychological thought that go with it) often have problems of their own in maintaining a professional detachment, both with their patients and their own hidden demons. In fact the idea of group therapy is designed to alleviate this sort of connection by dispersing the focus from the group leader but still subtly allowing them to control the flow of the discussion.
